@@BristecomI mean, sample libraries are much more detailed. The issue is, I think they are too detailed. The reality is, next to no composer has the time to spend hours and hours perfectly configuring articulations, drawing in realistic expression, bow changes and stuff on strings. Problem is, when you don't, any corner you cut is painfully obvious. The JV/XV synths sound beautiful out of the box and can be adjusted to measure, definitely easier on the XV-5080 as it has a much larger display than the JV-1080. The sounds are very musical, that's something most modern libraries lack... musicality. Considering most musicians will easily be able to tell a VST performance apart from a real performance, it seems silly to me now spending so much on these libraries which never will be a real orchestra and each year a new version comes out and everyone rushes to buy it. I'm pretty much limiting myself to my existing libraries for percussion and whatnot but just going to exclusively use my XV-5080, MS-20 to make some new music. At least for mock ups I can achieve what I want quickly and then if I really wanted it ti sound better I could spend a few weeks mixing some better modern libraries to perfection but, as said, most musicians will still be able to tell it's not real so I struggle to see the benefit anymore.

I enjoy the 1080 today. I use it often. No commentary on it sounding old or outdated. I’ll often soften some sounds by layering a basic big analog type pad behind it. Analog Soft pad (korg wavestation) namely. I’ll take the patch heavenals or d50 stack, assign their velocity minimum to 75 and put either of them behind a piano. This way the harder notes have a bell like accent, almost like a sparkle. I also like to use strings with this. I also use the mentioned wavestation, the xv5080, d50 and jd800.

So far I have excavated my JV 8080, the original Proteus , the Proteus 2000 and the Akai s1100 sampler (18 mb 🧐). I also retrieved both versions of the enigmatic Dark Star Synthesizer and a Korg M1R rack mount . So far the JV has convinced me to find a place for it in my current studio space ..like wise temporarily the S1100 so I can review the boxes and boxes of samples...I may keep it as a studio ornament. I’m currently studying how to create and script libraries in Kontakt and it appeals me to borrow from the JV and perhaps some of the other long forgotten instruments from the attic. If the Kontakt collection is any good I will submit it to Pianobook and also attempt Decent sampler and Exs24 versions. I love my 1080, still very relevant today. Worth noting that you were saying patch instead of tone, each patch is made up of four tones. For each tone, you’ve got two lfo’s and three envelopes. That’s a total of 8 lfo’s and 12 envelopes. The only way to get that many on an analog synth would be a modular one but it would be huge, would cost so much and would only be monophonic, and no sample based sounds. so the JV really is super - super versatile and powerful

I have never really got comfortable with them, though sonically they're lovely, of course. but your video & the editor have changed all that- thanks!

It’s Omnisphere in a box. I find I’m using it more these days than my Super Jupiter and Super JX modules (edit: and Komplete 13 CE).. Funnily enough the 04 vintage synths expansion goes for about the same price as the synth itself these days. I think it’s aged better than the far more expensive JD-990. Haven’t been able to try JV-XP Editor yet as I wasn’t aware it existed until now, but the page isn’t working currently. Same link you have here and on gearspace. The Don Solaris patches are pretty good too.

I lot of the Omnisphere sounds came from quite a bit of Roland vintage hardware esp the JD-990 as the building block. I think the Integra-7 is more closer to the Omnisphere equivalent given that its still in production today. It combines most of all of Roland's history in one sound module. It has every sound of the JV/XV series plus all 12 SRX Expansion sounds onboard, plus the modern Super Natural Jupiter 80 sounds, and many patches from the Jupiter and JD-990. That's over 6000 sounds in one box!

Great video and just what I need for my JV-2080 in Logic, would love to see your thoughts on the JV-2080 and how it compares to the 1080. I must admit i do find the external midi integration in Logic very clunky compared to something like Sonar formely cakewalk, which makes external midi so easy to work with particularly when wanting to switch a midi track from a software instrument to external unless I am missing a trick?

The problem with these samples is they all cut out at around 12 kHz. A few surpass that, but the effect of stacking 1080 2080 3080 5050 5080 orchestral patches (say) is that the ear doesn't hear anything in the frequency spectrum above the limit. As a result the sounds tend to mush together. They no longer have a distinct formant in the upper frequencies. And yeah, I owned 3 XV3080.

Yes, we had a thing called patch editors for these synths decades ago. Opcode on the Mac was the king. Great editors. Then Gibson bought Opcode and promptly killed off the company. But the software editors are still available for free download and old Macs can be had for only a few dollars.

I personally don't store my custom patches inside the unit. I use the preset patches as a base to create custom patches just by changing the waveforms and tweaking a few other parameters. I write all my custom parameters on paper, what patch I used and the waveforms. I do the same thing with my Emu Proteus 2 because I don't want to overwrite any of the presets.

Lovely video thanks!! !! I have a question :: I have a JV-1080 and the performance mode gets overwhelmed with very few midi messages (with Logic). When people used to compose with 16 channels, did they just only do volume and modulation automation? Any pitch bend messages and it gets overwhelmed (certain instruments not sounding and ruining the arrangement).....

as a little followup -- i just booted it up again to see if i missed something from before. but literally when there's only 2 channels playing (each monophonic and not very fast) it misses notes. I think this is something wrong with my version of Logic? anybody have experience?

It’s a great part of Roland’s approach to blending sampling and synths!
@looneyburgmusic2 жыл бұрын
Pretty much every Roland PCM-based synth engine since the LA-synthesis of the D-50 is set up in the same general way - Each "tone" is effectively its own synth, with patches being created by layering the different tones. That's the part where a lot of people get confused with Roland synths in general - thinking they are programming a "single" synth when creating a patch, when they are really programming several at the same time. Once you get your head around that it can really unlock the power of these synths, even the earlier models like the JV or D-Series.

Awesome combi! Can this plug in control a modern e-piano like roland lx 17? I wish so much to control channels in a faster way while playing
@StephenTallamyMusic2 жыл бұрын
From what I can see the LX17 doesn’t have standard MIDI out ports and so you would likely need to connect the LX17 via USB to a computer and then get a MIDI interface for the computer plus use some software (any DAW should do this) to send from the LX17 USB midi through to the MIDI out of the interface. As for controlling channels, I’m not entirely sure what you mean there.
@emanuel_soundtrack2 жыл бұрын
@@StephenTallamyMusic There is midi via Bluetooth and cable. Via cable i can control it externally as well with cc controlers when connected on logic pro, or play not4s from logic pro to roland, triggering samples of roland. Program change works, also expression. Only a message to change channel i can’t do it. I want to have buttons for each channel on screen and set it as the midi out of the piano, without having to ⏭ the whole time on piano. But luckily after being nerd enough i found a way to set channels directly using 5 buttons of the roland itself, the hack was to save as registration. So i press now directly the channel i want, and this is so important for engraving on logic pro and also arranging. But i want a plug in that triggers all the 16 channels via key command, for i can send it to stream deck. So i press the channel i want directly, without having to click or skip too much. I wonder why not every composer requires this from developers.The Arturia midi controler has a good functionality to change channels quickly but not that perfect still, why not put the buttons of each channels there… And more: ideally i would like to duplicate and send one note for two or more channels, pressing buttons simultaneously. It is basically the work of a mute/solo on mixer, but for channels…. Midi interface i dont have, just audio. There is this thing on midi environment , the multi output instrument, where we can click direct on channel, but i don’t now how to make sense from it and change channels on hardware. I could use this on ipad as side car then it would be some solution maybe. But, while i don’t find a plugin for this, i am so happy that for 5 channels i can have a direct button as preset ;)

I guess really that depends on what you want to use it for. Out of the box there are lots of sounds that are very 1990s (which might be what you need), but if you are willing to spend some time building your own patches (or buy some sound sets) it can be quite an inspiring alternative to an in the box synth.

Could you please run through how to set up the JVXP controller, I can't get it to work and based on your video we are running similar setups.
@looneyburgmusic2 жыл бұрын
There is nothing difficult or confusing about the menu system on any of the Roland PCM based synths from the D-50 on, it's simply a different setup from the 'Knobs and Sliders" of the Analog world. The problem a lot of people have when looking to program original patches is they expect instant results and gratification, and that is just not how these synths work. Much like the FM-engines made famous by Yamaha, Roland synths require the programmer actually learn the synth, and learn why things work they way they do. You just can't randomly change settings the way it can be done on an analog and hope for the best.
@StephenTallamyMusic2 жыл бұрын
When I first got mine the presets were pretty much all I needed and so I never really took the time to learn to program it. I’ve enjoyed returning to look at it again now. My challenge with the menu system is it can be hard to visualise the whole patch at once, which is why I liked the editor.
@looneyburgmusic2 жыл бұрын
@@StephenTallamyMusic It does take some getting used to, trying to imagine what a full patch can sound like only in your head, but it's well worth the effort. Even the 80's LA-series, the D-50 and all it's little brothers, are still very capable synths when programmed properly.
@Voxrobot3 жыл бұрын
Nice Deep dive! I might pick up one of these - a very reasonably priced synth now a days! I love to add these add these old digi sounds (I still love my Korg M1) from their 14 -16 converters behind the pristine multi-sampled 144k orchestral sets. The crap converters and highly compressed sound sets add a quite bit - in the case of the M1 - to the low end. Is better because it is worse! I nearly broke into a sweat when you started patch editing DX7 style. I have been on a crusade to (and by crusade I mean screaming at my computer) to get Apple to at least ass the very rudimentary bank and patch selection the MIDI track already has. Managing two different tracks seems redundant this day and age. This was solved 30 years ago - it was a doddle to copy a bit of sysex to the head of the track and done! But I'm showing my age now!

Yeh - the whole midi environment really has lost favour to the virtual synth/sampler world. Perhaps the interest in modular synths may drive things back a little more towards midi/CV.
