Using A Sidechain Gate Mixing Drums

My first delve into a tutorial type video. Sidechain gating is super useful in the recording and mix process. I thought I'd show you how I use it with a kick drum here, but it has many more uses too. Hopefully this concept makes your life a bit easier and might even spark some ideas for other uses! Any questions, please fire away.

So a gate is being applied also on the farther kick mic based off of what the close kick mic is picking up. Is that correct? I've gone over it a few times but I am not sure I got it right.

Hey Mark! Do you always fine tune and automate the gate, or you can live letting some tom hits get through? I guess it's the "if it sounds good, it's good" approach? :)

Pedro Mau yeah, quite right. Unless it’s a real pig, I usually get away with leaving it be, especially on kick drum, unless the player is super dynamic. Case by case and all that. Its definitely great for bottom snare as that can be gated even if the top isn’t 🤓
