I have a 289, similar in age to Chester's. And the fence from my 2 78's do not fit under the sole of the 289. Great video Chester, hope your recovering is going well 😊

Thanks, Chet, for the detail on not just the 289, but also on the 78. Very informative. Now you have me wanting a 289 for my collection.

There is not much info about the 289. This is great. Can you explain the difference between the 78 and 289 depth stop? Also a bonus question, do you know of a source for the scoring spurs (I guess I need two, one left and one right), mine are worn out.

I have a 289 I’ve used since the 1970’s - a sweetheart version with the 3 lobe nicker, which as it turns out is rarer. I remember a steep learning curve , but once I got through that it’s a sweet filletster plane. Though the fence and rod looks like they won’t work on a 78, the threading on the rod is the same. It will stick way out front of a 78, though. There are many 289’s in the wild where lost fences were replaced with 78 Rods and fences, so watch out! A 289 fence will cost as much as the plane. New 78’s have metric theading. I found out when I bought a flea market one just for its fence.

I also have a 289 with a three-lobe knicker. I don't know why they changed it, or which is better, but the three-lobe knicker is much easier to find for replacement. Also, I think the depth-stop from the 78 can be used with the 289.

Chet, I picked up a 289 at an antique store not really knowing what it was. I knew a lot less about hand planes then as I do now. Unfortunately, mine didn’t have a fence or depth stop. I know these aren’t interchangeable with the more common 78. I’m having a lot of difficulty finding a replacement fence and depth stop, and I’m wondering if you could give me some dimensions to them so I can DIY a replacement. What tread size was used for the rod? Length of rod, width, height length and depth of the fence, etc. If you can do this I would be extremely grateful.

Thanks for making this video! Might work a little better if you score with a backward pull first. I have one, and that seems to help.

They are similar in some design ways but definitely designed to do different jobs. My 78 has been a “ go to” plane for over 50!years. It has a good feel and delivers on it uses, well. I didn’t mean the comparison as a competition between the two and I would never consider the 289, a replacement for a 78. Thanks for your comments and for watching
