I found that a freshwater tank was way harder then a saltwater mixed reef tank

I am planning on setting up a 5Ft tank and cant decide if to go with salt or freshwater. Why do you think freshwater is more difficult?

Those filter pads will not remove nitrates at all. More plants will remove it, deep sand beds will or water changes. Stocking a tank too fast will cause your ammonia and nitrite to spike. Those are what are most harmful to fish not nitrates. Nitrates are what nitrite is converted to which is less harmful. Running dirt in your aquarium will cause spikes in levels too. There is no way you got a nitrate spike stocking too fast. It's not possible, the bacteria isn't in the system yet to break your ammonia down yet.

Agreed. This video was made some time ago -it was my first freshwater sump- and I've learned quite a bit since then regarding the Nitrogen cycle. Thanks to informative insight from viewers like you, my own research and hands on experience, this tank and sump is now dialed in.
