Not sure if you could answer this, but do you know why some of these fishermen are wearing paper on the side of their glasses? Not sure if it’s an Italian thing or not. Thanks!

@@longloopslad1974 It's typical only of feluca fishermen, in order to avoid the reflections of the sun in the eyes which could disturb the sighting of fishes.

Swore he said it instantly kills them and they don’t fight . And I’m watching him fight it and through out bouys to allow the fish swim till is expires . Maybe I didn’t hear him right .

Yeah, made a comment same as yours. First fish and they are ready with a tether and a bouy - huh.

You heard him right… they told him the fish die instantly and the meat is sweeter because they don’t build up so much lactic acid in the muscle. I had the exact same thought. 15 minutes in and interested to see more catches… Then again… the Italians aren’t known for their adherence to the dictates of the clock, and they’re speaking through a translator that doesn’t have the best (tho still very good!) English. It might have just been “it kills them faster” or an error in translation.

The etymology of the word "Felouka" comes from the Arabic "El Foulke" which means the ark. Felouka is a diminutive of el foulke, meaning a small boat. Flouka is widely used in Algeria and Tunisia. Historical data demonstrate a very close influence of Arab culture and traditions in Sicily, Sardinia and southern Italy.

I worked in a large seafood restaurant in San Diego/Point Loma, and boats would pull up to a dock next to the receiving area of the restaurant and we would unload many species of fish for processing daily. My favorite fish, besides ahi, was swordfish. I was sadden to see these fisherman pulling in what we would have thrown back because it looked 4-5 times smaller than what we used to get. BTW, this was in the mid 70’s.

Populations of small sized fish very indicative of over fishing. You'd think they'd learn from the destruction of their Blue fin Tuna population. A classic saying from irresponsible fishers and hunters (as the population depletes from their activities), "quick catch it before they are all gone".

I longlined for years these are most definitely baby fish. they would grow to 100 lbs in 5-7 years. They can get 1000lbs. The keeper size in the United States is 25 inches without the sword. This fish is only double the size of a minimum size fish in America and probably most of the world.
@andyjones7121Ай бұрын
Is swordfish the best fish to catch? Aren't they overfished and they're all much smaller than they used to be? In FL, keeping swordfish is frowned upon, but I guess different places have different standards.
@andyjones7121Ай бұрын
I guess people who will kill you because you got one more meatball than them don't care if swordfish become endangered. I didn't think this through.

It doesnt struggle, no stress so they taste better... 5min later we see what that looks like. Its pulling, badly injured, struggles and gets put on a buoy so they can hunt the next one. As effective that may be and i respect the tradition behind it. The time for such practise is over. Just get the fish to the boat, kill it quickly and be done with it.

and they indiscriminately land baby and adolescent swordfish too zero consideration for the spawing patterns of a fish that is already overfished in the mediterranean

While this isn't my type of fishing, but for a commercial operation I like it a lot. This is a much less destructive way to fish rather than the long-liners or nets that can be several miles long and have a tremendous amount of bycatch that gets tossed away not to mention the nets that break off and trap whales and dolphins along with other unintended kills.
