Now I get it....Thanks, I can't tell you how much I wrestle with my FORESPAR Whisker Pole in the shifting winds of the Columbia River (while dodging PWC's) here in Portland. This method makes all the sense in the world. Can't wait to try it. p.s. If you need the FORESPAR tech support .... they are fantastic. I just purchased and shortened a used Spinnaker Pole and they walked me right thru it....

Great video! I actually just did this today, based on hearing about it, and came to look it up to see what that pole was called and how it *should* have been done (since I now know I should have furled the jib first - that'll make it much easier when sailing single-handed as I usually do. Today I had a guest to hold the tiller and help pull the sheets as needed.) It really is easy once you do it, if I'd seen this video before I'd have done it already.

Glad you liked it. I learned a lot shooting it! And like you, I learned to sail dodging those jet skis on the Columbia River (I now live in the San Juan Islands). And, yes, Forespar is a good company.

I'm from and in the Portland area. Buying a Catalina 27 at the end of August. The boat appears to have a long and a short whisker pole but no roller furling head sail. Don't even know how to hook the jib to the forestay. Guess I should have a look at the sails.

OK now I really envy you, Sailing the San Juan's.... We bought our boat from some nice folks that lived at Fish Creek on the southern tip of San Juan Island. Kept it in Anacortes for a few months before sailing down to the Columbia and on to Portland. I could easily spend a lifetime sailing the islands. I did use the video techniques most of the 100 miles back up the river to Portland and it was fantastic....We made some of the best time ever on the trip back.

I'm buying a Catalina 27 at the end of August. Pretty well rigged I think and has some new sails. Needs electronics and an outboard motor bracket. Would love to sail to the San Juan's. I'm in Portland and so is the boat. Not sure how challenging crossing the bar is at Astoria. There are two whisker poles that come with this Catalina it appears. A short one 6 or 8 feet long I'd guess and another longer one that has a telescoping section on one end.

Nice to see it demonstrated. However, when I use my whisker pole, it slides down the sheet aft and hits the forward lower shroud. So I've been using a fore guy on it. No guys shown in the video. Am I doing something wrong?

Note how it attaches to the nast and deployed.

doesn't there need to be a fore and aft preventer lines?

Oh, one must be a whisker pole and the other a spinnaker pole.

How far can one be off the wind, assuming the main has a "preventer" set-up?

For us, you can still be wing on wing 20 degrees off dead downwind, but by that point you would be better off reaching for sure. Anything more than 10 degrees either side and I would say just reach, but it is nice if you want to cook, or use the head, or do some scrubbing. because you are just being pushed, and not "sailing" the motion is quite different, and there can be more roll, so be careful if single handed, or the only one on deck. We do it in racing, though that is quite rare, most boats would prefer "playing the angles" the nice thing, is that there is no active trimming to be done, so you can get things sorted out on the boat before the next beat.
