Wonderfully clear and comprehensive. Many thanks 🙂

I single handed from Panama to Hawaii to Guam (and many other trips) and a lot of it was with my trusty Forespar adjustable whisker pole. Rarely were the seas so calm, LOL! Great video! Practice a lot in flat water, you don't want to learn this with big waves and strong wind.

Before I got my Whisker pole sailing down wind was down right frustrating with the genoa constantly filling and collapsing, but since I got my whisker pole its great.... Just set the pole up trim and relax..... I can't believe I waited so long to get the pole.

Is there a formula to have a pole with an x lentgh and diameter for a particular boat size? Also, I could see the angle of the jib sheet, fairly steep, but where was the jib sheet car in all this? Thanks for the tips.

Why are the jaws down vs. up on the whisker pole?
@travisweaver60526 жыл бұрын
You don't really go into how you set up a foreguy or aft guy, or if/how you set up the bridle for the topping lift, how the cars are installed on the track (like what kind of cars) and how the halyard works with said cars,...There's a lot of missing information.

Yeah, this is more a sales video. The info you want is online or your rigger will run it down with you.

It looks like you have two topping lifts on there. One on the end of the outer sleeve and the other on the clip end of the inner sleeve.

Better off sailing broad reach angles over DDW in lighter air I think?

I always do jaws up so the pole falls away under gravity. Can you tell me the benefit of jaws down please?
@bbrrwwnn5 жыл бұрын
We were told jaws up for spinnaker poles, jaws down for whiskers.

I sail "jaws down" and when I'm done, I let the pole slide down the sheet as I pull the pole back shorter to take it off.

@@mattb9003 Matt, thx for replying. When handling larger and heavier poles I hope the uphaul will take the weight. This could work on whisker poles though. I will try it out

Same question. My instinct would be jaws up so that if needed, I can drop the pole down from the sheet.

No way that method will work on my Catalina 400 with a 155 Genoa. The clew comes back so far that I must route the whisker pole in between the shrouds. Its not easy. Its not convenient. In fact I hate it. Once I get everything set however...it works well. But, just getting the pole installed thru the shrouds and attached to the clew is very difficult. Any tips on how to rig this without going overboard?
@bbrrwwnn5 жыл бұрын
4speedfunk Yes, a 155 genoa would set the clue very far back...UNLESS you extended the pole out further and used fore and aft guys. Note here in this video that the jib is not completely unfurled. This is fine for shorter runs and you might try it . The whisker pole should never, ever be extended aft the mast. The car is not designed to take that stress and will break. The pole should essentially be in line with your boom under way. Cheers!

Don't unfurl all the way...

If the pole is the same length as the foot of the genoa and the shrouds do not project forward from the mast then the pole should always be in front of the shrouds. Is your pole too short?
