Using Adobe Photoshop Elements to Organize Digital Pictures - 2 out of 4 Review

Hi! You're a hero of photo organization, thanks for all you do! I've been using elements for years because I find the organizer really powerful, and you get a cheap pretty-much complete version of photoshop. There's a whole bunch of disadvantages to the elements platform, but here's a couple of things that would help -- first of all, think of the "catalog" as a database of metadata for organizing your pictures. When you "backup" in elements, you're really just backing up the catalog, not the images. However -- after all the work you do organizing and tagging your stuff, you can "write metadata to the files." I'm working with ~40,000 images, so it takes a few minutes to do that. The facial recognition and smart tagging are really handy for organizing piles of pics, and you can sort and filter by almost anything.

There is a learning curve for the program, While the backup isn't automatic it does back up your total catalog if done right. I've used it to move my catalog around. I believe once you learn how to use it you will like it. As for the lost files, the program points to the image where it is stored. When you import you can determine where it is stored. The example of the friend that lost her pictures was because the file structure for her pictures was changed outside the program. All images need to be moved within the program and it isn't hard to do. I store all my images on an external hard drive. If my hard drive isn't attached it thinks they are lost but they aren't. In the menus and if you right click an image one of the choices is to update the date of the image. I've scanned old pictures then changed it to the date the original picture was taken.

@@Pixologie Thanks for the reply, that said I watched an hour and 20 minute video on Mylio and purchased a subscription. While I believe organizer is a good program I found the use of the Mylio amazing as far as sharing across all devices. Since you are a Mylio user, I have a question about file management. I have the majority of my images in a folder called PSE Catalog. I organized them into folders by year. I know I can import everything from that folder structure but I don't know if it is better that all the images be in the vault. Do I just link to those folders or should I move them?

Hi Katherine - at first glance looking at their webpage to compare versions. . . www.adobe.com/products/photoshop-elements/upgrade.html I don't think so. It looks to me like the program is heavily focused on editing so I can't speak to the backup features and easy of use in organizing photos. I will try to test this out in the near future.
