Thanks again, Paul. Looks like a real time saver. A couple of questions: How much is an Alaskan mill, and which one(s) would you recommend? How powerful a saw do you need and with what minimum length bar? How long can you comfortably store those logs with the bark still on them? Thanks again. Caleb still calls you "grandpa" when we watch your videos together.
@TheBeardedCarpenter5 жыл бұрын
James Aldridge Howdy Jim- it’s definitely a time saver. My mill is the 36”Granberg Alaskan. I’ve seen them advertised but I didn’t get the price. I’ve had mine over 25 yrs. You could Google and get a price and where you can get one. They can be a lifesaver in a log build. My saw l use is a 94 cc. I think you could use the saw you have but not push it too hard. I try to get the bark off as soon as I can but these oak has been cut a few weeks. I’ve had a lot of stuff to do here lately and kinda got behind on some things. Give that precious little boy a hug for me. God bless y’all
@TheBeardedCarpenter5 жыл бұрын
James Aldridge Sorry, forgot to tell you that those mills can be adjusted to fit the length of your bar.

I think it is every real mans dream to one day build a log cabin. I am in central Ga. where there is abundant pine and hardwood on my property to have the material to build one. How is pine for log material?
@TheBeardedCarpenter2 жыл бұрын
Howdy Johnny- if you have pine you can certainly build a cabin. That’s what I use because we have it in abundance here. Wishing you the very best with your cabin build. If I can help just let me know. God bless you

Could you two side all your wall logs with this mill? Or would one of the timber tough beam maker type mills be better?
@TheBeardedCarpenter4 жыл бұрын
Howdy RN- yes, I actually bought the mill years ago for that very purpose. If you watch the video where l did the top plate logs you’ll see me milling some logs over twenty feet long. I’ve milled quite a few wall logs with the Alaskan mill. I use a 394 Husky which has the power to cut without bogging the saw down. I keep the chain sharp and it cuts pretty smooth and consistent. Thank you for watching and God’s blessings to you

Is there any particular brand that u like .im needing to buy a broad axe and hewing axe
@TheBeardedCarpenter4 жыл бұрын
Howdy Chris- there were many different makers of broad axes. I never paid a lot of attention to the maker, just to what condition the axe was in and how much work would be needed to restore it and get it to where it could be used. Wish you the best with getting what works for you. God bless you
