I've been watching some of your videos and I have a question about the logs being used, since I plan on building my own in a few years. Most other places I've checked tells me to air dry all my logs for at least a year before I start working with them (after debarking of course), but I haven't seen any mention of something like this in the early videos, but maybe I missed it. My question is should I be air-drying my logs for a year (maybe more) before I start building the log cabin with dovetail (or maybe half dovetail) notches? If so, should I leave them out in the open with a roof to keep the rain off, or just inside a big garage or warehouse instead? EDIT: I was thinking of doing the dovetail/half dovetail with full round logs but can't seem to find anything online about examples or others who have done so, it mostly seems to be half hewn or D logs. Would a Scandinavian Saddle notch be better for a full round log? The only reason I plan on using full round logs is I plan on doing all the work myself.

Howdy y’all- thank you so much for watching our videos. Much appreciated. I like to build with fresh cut logs and allow for the settling that will take place with angle iron in the openings to allow for settling. There will be some settling with logs that have seasoned for however long you let them set before using simply with the fiber crush that will take place. I don’t use round logs for wall logs because the sap wood is on the outside exposed to the weather. The hewn logs have heart wood to the elements and for that reason I feel it’s better. Lots of people like the round log look but where I’m at the log buildings that have stood the test of time have been the buildings that have hewn logs. However, I’ve seen some beautiful log homes with the round logs. If I were to build with round logs I would be sure to have an overhang on the roof that would protect the walls from any water ever getting on them. Wraparound porches would be good if you choose to go that route. I have a friend in Estonia who enjoys using round logs with full scribe but he uses a Norwegian locking notches that can be a bit complicated to cut and get them right. I hope this helps. Feel free to email me at [email protected] if you have any questions. God’s blessings to y’all

Why did you leave such a wide gap behind the batons?
@TheBeardedCarpenterКүн бұрын
Howdy y’all- all l could get out of my logs was 12” and I used a 31/2” batten strip so I could do the live edge look. I put a gap in between the boards to give them a wider appearance. Hope this explains it. God bless

Hello Brother Paul! what size finish nails are you using for the bats, and are you nailing them to the edges of the boards or in between so they are not attached to the boards?
@TheBeardedCarpenterКүн бұрын

The building is looking great with that patina, it makes me wonder whether untreated walls could make a comeback in the States. I have tried to promote untreated walls with my customers, not many have agreed but those who have don't regret it, the buildings just get more and more mellow and nothing convinces me that treated walls last any longer given the low effort involved with the untreated, especially the solid timber houses. Great videography and editing as always, Gods blessings to you and Mrs BC.

Howdy Lucas- yes, I like the weathered look also. The old cabins that are still around have the weathered look that just makes them special. I forgot a couple of things along the way. After sleeping on it a couple of things about technique came back to me. Two days off to recover and I'm ready to go again. Trucking had me out of shape with blood pressure issues. I quit trucking and lost 50+ lbs. I'm not recommending anyone 62 and a half years old to try log hughing. Lol

@TheBeardedCarpenter13 күн бұрын

Hi Paul. It looks like the cabin has aged beautifully! Can’t wait to see it finished 😊The BNB is a good idea. Our cabin has been a nice bit of retirement income. We stay about as busy as we want. You should do well since yours is unique and beautiful! That seems to be what people want. It’s kind of fun to share it with folks too. Just be aware that you will occasionally get a guest who may be clueless about taking care of stuff. Mostly though it’s good!😊👍

My neighbor whose mother passed away a couple years ago remodeled her small house to be an airbnb. It generates monies that help pay the taxes on their 100 acre place. If you charge fair rates and get good people you will do well but be prepared for the ones who aren't. I am doing the finishing touches now on my 12 x 12 cabin and hope to be complete by March. You are a master at your trade and an inspiration to me when I was building mine. I tried to incorporate some of the things I watched you do. While my craftsmanship and skill could never match yours I am proud of my structure. It is sound and probably overbuilt but I wanted it that way. Thank you for being the God fearing man and craftsman you are and I can't wait to see you complete this cabin. A forever fan from Georgia....
