I spooled it with 8 LB test mono for lighter lures, gave it some practice casts and found that it did cast well kzbin.infoUgkxSlytCJqozTF7EbdP4LWP-HUXf9WRDJ0e , except that the anti-backlash setting had to be turned up almost all of the way to keep the "overcasts' ' down. I disassembled it, and found that if I potted some "shim washers" behind that anti-backlash magnet assembly, it got the magnets closer to the spool without rubbing, and I could get better control with about a 6 to 7 out out 10-Max setting. I also noticed that the handle shaft had some internal end play, maybe only 2 or 3 thousands of an inch, but it's still noticeable. If the anti-backlash and shaft tolerances were "tightened up" this would be a fantastic value. I've only used it for 4 days of fishing in a month's time, but I plan on keeping it.

What fisherman hasn't had to deal with seeing his buddies butt crack once in a while. It's really unpleasant but it's just part of the game.

Not sure if you remember but my son and I met you at Big Fish Outfitters many weeks ago and it was an honor. As a mater of fact, the reason we were at Big Fish Outfitters was because my son and I wanted to visit the store because you had referenced it in some of your videos. We are from Lake Cumberland area in Kentucky and we started watching your videos last year and we wanted to try catfishing. My son caught a nice flat head our first trip out last fall. Now we can't stop catfishing. We sure have learned a lot from you and really enjoy watching your videos. Thanks for all the great content.

That classic cat rod is killer for this type of fishing. I use mono for this because braid tends to knot itself while bouncing. I use the weight on the bottom of a three way and a smelled 2/0 baitholder lopped through the 90degree portion of the three way. The stifness of the smelled rig holds the shad away from the main line.

I fish for crappie mostly but do catch cats often. The most fun I had was hooking a 20 lb blue cat on my 14 foot crappie rod with 4 lb test. I did get him in but he made a mess of all my other lines I had out. Love your show Dave , so does my wife and that is saying a lot.

I don't get the idea of the levelwind wearing out. I've got Ambassadeurs from the 60's still going strong with their original worm and pawl. No cats but tons of snook, jacks, cobia and tarpon. My Tatula 300's have brought in tarpon to 50lbs. and lots of cobia. They are awesome.

When I was younger I had a pflueger bait caster on an ugly stik and that’s all I used for about 10 years for all my fishing worked great for everything and still use bass setups for catfish to this day although I have a few catfish setups too

I'm a bank fisherman and I use a low profile baitcaster aka " bass reel " and 110 yards of 50 lb braid with a 40 lb leader and I primarily fish the Mississippi river. And there's actually only one part of the Mississippi River that's 200 ft deep and it's in some rural part of Arkansas. Most of the Mississippi River is actually regulated through a system of dams and pools to be only 9ft to 12ft deep so that it doesn't flood. and so you can get away with only 100 yards of line on the Mississippi River easily in most places.

Bass reel is sufficient, but i would go with a low gear ratio. The rod is serious overkill though. This is a shark rod. If u already have a bass reel, just get a bass rod as well, and at least you will enjoy fishing.
