Using Billy Cobham's "Red Baron" for Ideas

The melody in Red Baron has an interesting rhythmic device whereby 8th-note triplets are grouped in 4 eights to create some rhythmic tension. That opens the door for thinking up different licks that will accommodate this rhythmic device. In other words, you can think up some cool shit to play using this part of the melody.

Great video! When I heard this lick, it instantly caught my ear as something I’d heard in another song. Do you know which song quotes it directly? Is it a Zappa tune? George Duke? Some other jazz tune I’ve heard a bunch but can’t place? Thanks in advance.

@@thecreativedrummer5546 lol that's why I edited as soon as I realized I had it wrong. The sheet music my keyboard player found has the groupings notated in a confusing way... in all honesty it's because the sharps and flats throw the notes off the grid... so to this drummer it looked like the author would have been better off doing 5 tuplets. But that's only cuz I didn't really know the tune and what they were trying to express on paper. When I first heard the passage it sounded like a really nasty 5 tuplet to me. But your video explains the modulation perfectly... and after a couple days practicing your techniques, I got it down pretty good. So big thanks to you!
