To add the highlight you can just create an empty 3rd layer and set the layer mode to overlay or even just eliminate the white aspect of the layer, making it transparent, then just color in the high light you want and you should see the layers beneath as well. It's all about setting your layer modes.

Thanks for the tutorial I have a problem using sketchbook When I paint a color let's say light blue, when my brush pases over that color again, the blue's opacity increases, and when I pass my brush over it again, it's opacity still increases till it reaches it's max, what settings did I do wrong, Please help me out
@fabio_gioffre
@fabio_gioffre 3 жыл бұрын
Hmm ya that sounds like its has to do with the brush you are using. Each brush has different settings. Try and play around with the HARDNESS/SIZE & OPACITY settings. Go to Window>brush Palettes and then choose the little slider Icon to bring them up. Some brushes have advanced settings as well so you can play with those. You can also just try a different brush with more opacity and hardness.

huh? not sure if i fully get what you doing. i suggest you use layer-blending modes on top of your layer set-up. So, darken for shadows, lighten for light areas and a base for the shape. BUT ACTUALLY you could just put the shape layer on top and set that one to color, so now you can really separate darks, lights AND control which color(temperature fi) they have.

I don’t understand - how does locking the layer transparency not let the colour out of the lines? Or did I miss something important?
@fabio_gioffre
@fabio_gioffre 3 жыл бұрын
honestly not too sure about the specifics but as long as the lock icon is pressed on the layer, you can only colour in any painted areas. And you can't erase. is it not working for you?
@irenelalouve2679
@irenelalouve2679 2 жыл бұрын
Basically we see the transparency as a white canvas-in reality it is not*that is why, this clipping mask effect will ONLY work if you shade first the area you want to apply the clipping mask on, otherwise this trick will not work. Of course you can shade it white ( in this example apply with the bucket the white colour inside the circle shape) and then lock the transparency which means you can only work on what is created from you. What it basically does, it doesn't let you modify the transparency (the initial background).If you have painted anything on it though, and lock the transparency what you do affects what you draw, colour etc, and nothing else.That is why it works as a clipping mask, but it isn't really. If before doing this, you had the background already coloured, it will not work, it will mess up the backround as well what you have drawn (meaning there will be no clipping mask effect).

I just got a surface laptop studio 2 and really want to use it for drawing. I have an iPad pro as well and been using procreate for years... the lack of clipping masks, free hand lasso tool, and color fill options are my biggest setbacks on my surface. Is there an app, outside of Adobe products, that you can recommend that has those 3 features I just mentioned? Even if it's paid, I'll get it. I tried the concepts app and it was such a letdown. I am using sketchbook, and it's the closest thing to procreate I have found thus far but still missing that clipping mask and free hand lasso tool that procreate has. Your input would be greatly appreciated

@@fabio_gioffre I've had it since it was originally just a $5 app from back in 2012 and I used to just have a crummy ASUS tab with a not so great stylus. What made it interesting to me back then, was the ability to zoom in and clean up areas to much higher resolutions that I could on real media with a needle sharp pencil. When it got revamped to the Pro version, I realized that it had stepped up its game significantly- but back then I had work tools such as Bluebeam Revu Extreme that I used instead (not per its intended use but it worked great). Then when I finally got a real drawing tool Cintiq 16, I finally began to take it a bit more seriously. And that brought me to finally ask a lot more questions- about what works and what doesn't really... This feature helped a lot!!

Or.... you don't try to paint that way in Sketchbook and use it for what it can do best. Usually, I would like to paint on different layers, but this is not Photoshop or CSP. So I just create base layers with locked transparency to separate certain parts of the drawing and then do she coloring on the same layer for each part. Bc as soon as you decide to change your base color on the original base layer, you are screwed and the workflow for this workaound gets messy really quick. Still like the video tho. I just say: Don't use the wrong tool for the job. It's hard enough even with the right tool. :)
