Thank you for this Mufti. I always wondered why if the hair is naturally dark, (black) especially why it would be prohibited to color it black [So I would resist dying it black] Especially if it is natural to an individual. Assalaamualaykum Shaykh Mufti Menk. Respect, but 40 years ago, I read that black henna dye was permissible for ladies but not for men. Back then, the older men used orange henna to dye their beard. I also read an ahadith that the men of the Jews dyed their hair black, and this is the reason why muslim men could not use black as they are not allowed to follow the infidels. My reason for dying my hair is that grey hair makes me look old, and then I feel old. Then I do not even want to look in the mirror. But when my hair is dyed, I look ten years younger, I feel younger, and I don't mind looking in the mirror. My personal opinion is do what makes you feel good to worship Allah in a more fervent manner and to follow the sunnah of the prophet SAW more earnestly. If you look old, you feel old and want to lay down and die. Don't do this. Live. Live to do more good deeds so your chances of a higher abode in the hereafter is increased. Live as a youth. Have the wisdom of a senior, and all will be well. In-shā-Allāh Amin.

Use dark brown or chestnut henna. Must be henna. Others has peroxide in it. Will burn.

Don't dye your hair or beard black or extra black because it causes baldness or more greyness dye if you want it dark use very dark brown and indeed use henna because the rest is garbage.
