Unveiling Colorful Language in Ecuador: Acceptance, Taboos, and Boundaries
Join me on an insightful journey through the vibrant linguistic landscape of Ecuador as I delve into the nuances of colorful language and its social acceptance. In this video, I explore the cultural perceptions, societal norms, and attitudes surrounding the use of explicit language, including the infamous "F" word.
Discover the varied perspectives on whether colorful language is considered good or bad within Ecuadorian society. Learn about the contexts in which such expressions might be accepted, tolerated, or frowned upon, shedding light on the intricate relationship between language, culture, and social norms.
I navigate through the fine line between freedom of expression and cultural boundaries, examining how Ecuadorians perceive and regulate the use of colorful language in different settings, such as casual conversations, media, and public spaces.
Whether you're curious about the cultural implications of language or interested in understanding the boundaries of expression in Ecuador, this video offers an engaging exploration of the multifaceted nature of colorful language and its place within this diverse and dynamic society.
Note: This video aims to provide insights into the cultural aspects of language in Ecuador and does not encourage or promote the use of explicit language.

Two other things to consider. First, the reaction by some Ecuadorians to certain words and phrases could arise less from Ecuadorian culture as a whole than from their Catholic upbringing specifically. Perhaps this is a fine line. After all, Catholicism prevails so much in Ecuador that it has become a key part of the culture overall, and as a result it may be hard to differentiate between them. Even so, not everyone in Ecuador is a Catholic, and not even all Catholics actively practice their religion. This being the case, it's quite possible that the locals we consult on this topic (of language) are Catholics, and they may not speak for all Ecuadorians (even if they do in fact speak for most of them). Second, there is another distinction to consider here, and that is between (1) taking offense at one word itself versus (2) taking offense at an insult. As a case in point, there are plenty of Americans who bristle at the word, fuck, and even those of us who liberally season our language with this word don't exactly enjoy having someone tell us to fuck off. Likewise, suppose, for instance, instead of saying to an Ecuadorian, "Fuck you" (or the Spanish equivalent) we were to say, "You stupid ass." Do we really think that by avoiding the word, fuck, the person to whom we direct an insult will be cool with it? All this to say that it's hard to know if it's really the word, fuck, people object to or whether instead the issue is that we are disrespectful in general. I know I would rather someone say to me, "Holy fuck, if it isn't Jeff Mincey," than to say, "Jeff, go to hell." For me, then, it's less about the word than the meaning and intent behind it on the part of the speaker.

As a language teacher and someone who’s just been here and in the states long enough, there are so many factors that determine how severe any “curse word” is. People in Ecuador love and I mean LOVE to say the “D” word (in Spanish it’s with a V) and most of the time there’s no offense to it, it just rolls off the tongue for everyone here lol But anyways, that’s a topic for another day, awesome video brother and loved the Stella segment at the end. 💯

Don, thank you for bringing up this topic. My late southern mother would be horrified at how often the f word slips out of my mouth. Not like Richard Pryor, but still too often. I appreciate knowing how offensive it is there, and will do my best not to use it when I arrive next month. I’m curious though…I thought in Spanish the word was “chinga”. Is that also an offensive word, and does it mean “f?” Thanks as always for a great video!!!

Being Swedish I can say that the equal word if the F-ford dont exist as a cuss word in the Swedish langauage. The acrual direct tranalation is a more crude word for the sexual act, but its not a cuss word. Neither are explanations of what someone is going to do to ones mother even a concept of cussing in our language. We mainly use different words for urine and shit, differend words for cursed, we cast curses, hell is pretty popular when cursing someone, we use a plethora of words for the devil, and many versions of the male and female genitalia. Especially both C-words. Most of all, we use all these in combinations from different sections. Example hitting ones toe on something really hard one may explain Helvetes Jävla Fitta, which basically means Hellish Damned (a form of devils name) ending with female C-word.

Now that we know at least one word to avoid in Ecuador, (and thanks for bringing this to light), it begs the question - what words are commonly used in Ecuador to express disappointment, frustration, and anger? Ecuadorians have their own culture, granted, but that doesn't mean they don't get angry from time to time. So it would be helpful and interesting to know what words we might hear on the street if two locals are engaged in a heated argument or they have cause to be angry over an incident of some kind. In other words, what CAN we say to express anger there? Since we are not made of steel, and we might need to blow off some steam now and then, (stopping short of abusing people of course), I wonder what Ecuadorians themselves do in this regard.

@@DonShader, Thanks Don. I look forward to hearing their take on this. Obviously no one wants to be the target of another person's ire, and it's not anyone's idea of fun to hear expletives hurled in their direction. But as I say, being human, sometimes we are not at our best, and I'm curious as to what colorful and salty language Ecuadorians themselves use from time to time.

Hi Don: will you please interview a Blue Box insurance agent about how private health insurance is handled. I understand that we need to contact Blue Box agent when we need to see a private physician or go to a private hospital. They coordinate the appointments and obtain approval from the insurance company (i.e. Confiamed). We will have to pay out of pocket for all visits and hospital stays. The Blue Box agent will then coordinate the submittal of all paid bills and arrange for us getting reimbursed. This is the process for private health insurance.

As a person afflicted with this particular expletive in rash moments I appreciate the analysis. Especially the bit about getting butt whooped for it's overuse. My wife would be particularly happy if I could delete this bad habit. And it would save me the need to apologise so often. I might add that my wife blames the affliction on inappropriate YT content.

I have heard the history of this word as well, it's actually extremely interesting. Coming of age and teen years in the 60's, this has been a staple of my language patterns as well... sometimes it is the only expletive/descriptive that will serve LOL! While I have practiced containing this depending on who I am around, sometimes, like you, what is a "normal" expression in my life just pops out. In Mexico, not such a problem (depending on the people of course)... but here, definitely a no-no. Language is a powerful force! Great vid, Don!

Well, fuck. Guess I shouldn't go to Ecuador, then. It's my favorite word. The Finns that I work with say it even more than I do, which was quite a surprise. They are quite fluent in English, but it was still unexpected that they use that word so much. I wonder how it would be taken if a woman said it a lot?

It actually comes from an abbreviation of a jail-able offence in olde England. E.g He was jailed “for unlawful carnal knowledge”. Not sure why Chat GPT hid this from you, but that in itself is of concern. Even Chat GPT lies which makes it more human day by day.

Hi Don 😊 Thanks a lot for the lesson and please, let Stella know, she is 100% correct, as is the description you found. If she had heard the completely insane insults I got over the phone from the complete idiot (sorry but, no other words cover), calling himself an imployee within the office of the Danish state attorney (yes, Scandinavian - by I, teferred to as Hell) "just" because he and his sad staff, have breached all national as well as International laws, treaties, conventions etc against - especially - us Danes who dare living abroad, oh but Stella, - she would have been furious. Thankfully, I had the of recording the tirade and, will eventually use the tape recording against mentioned subject hence yes, the f-word was used repeatedly and, is used as a pure insult/treath, even within certain European "administrators" and in the courts - sadly still (2023) - especially against our sex..many European men (and some women) clearly feel intimidated when we know our rights and not least, the law...and are not afraid to speak out mind...this clearly trigger the f-word and worse. Thank you so much for taking this up Don and Stella. And, thanks to all Ecuadorians for being and, speaking sense ..💕💓💕🌹🌹🌹
