My mom taught me to use a small steel crochet hook( such as one to crochet doilies) to punch holes on a hemmed fabric to add a crocheted edge. That way the edge is created into the garment, and fits exactly without having to be sewn on after it is made.

Thank you for this video I appreciate your wording all that you put into this. I like the idea of having some extra cover up. I agree not everybody is going to dig the idea but you straight put it out there that if they don't they could just move on but you said it in a very kind way. I just want you to know that I appreciate you for doing that. No drama girl, I like that

It is so much fun to make additions to things that make them fit you and your needs more. I love shawls and shawlettes personally for times when I am actually dressed. I have also made a "boob bib" before for a wrap dress that would pop open a lot. It was fun to add pops of color under that black dress too.

Yes! One of my summer projects is to add some lacy sleeves to some tank tops that I have. I've grown more self-conscious of my upper arms, but don't want to discard my beautiful sleeveless tops. Kristin Omdahl is another KZbinr who has several tutorials for pretty lacy sleeves. Thanks for the video!

Thank you for all the wonderful tips and ideas! I’ve had the bug to add crochet to necklines (I also made a couple crochet collars), add sleeves to sleeveless tops, and edging to skirts. That’s how I found out about Kristin Omdahl and the Ammee’s Babies books of edgings and the Edgit crochet piercing hook. I’ve only added a scalloped edge (after first adding a row of blanket stitch in crochet thread) to a skirt that’s hem had come undone and it benefited from the extra length and a neckline but that was a fail as it flaired because I added too many stitches. I eventually donated that top. My work just informed us that they’re turning up the base temperature in our building to save money during the summer so I’m thinking I might zhuzh up a few of my cooler “house” tops, dresses, and skirts to stay cool at work. Good for church too because our A/C is often broken.

I think that’s a great excuse to get to work on those crochet embellishments!!! The AC in my office can’t keep up with the really hot summer days so I’m in the same boat as you!

We are so on the same wavelength with this concept. I actually have 2 videos in the works on this exact topic, lol. Ive filmed the intro but im still deciding on yarn and patterns to make a modesty panel on a dress that the neckline is too low for me and then I'm going to lengthen a slightly too short dress (that one i have to decide if I just sew a band around the bottom or give it a ruffle or crochet some trim). So in the coming months, I'll be doing this exact thing lol. Great minds thinks alike I guess :)

A very good video, Shannon. Thank you. In addition to using crochet to make clothes more modest, tiny crochet additions can also make a plain piece of clothing into something beautiful and extraordinary! (P.S. Hi Shannon, I enjoyed your topic today. I would love to see more videos on repurposing your clothes. I think it's fun to see what you come up with. I tried once to fix a hole in my shirt. It ended up horrible and I never wore it again. I really liked the color of the t shirt but not the appliques I put on it. It got a hole from a spot of bleach. What do you think you would have done to fix it? It was right in the middle of the shirt.
@ShannonTalksYarn5 ай бұрын
Thank you Leilonni! It’s so hard to know it’s it!?!? I feel like I don’t always like how i adapt my clothes either! My advice would be to not be afraid to take it out and change your mind. Try something else. Or possibly add more! Like add some matching crochet to the neckline or sleeves to carry it all over. 😃

You could cut straight down the center if it was infront. Fold n hem, then crochet a border as wide as needed with matching border on other side. Add an edging around the collar, like pico every two stitches. Use soft silky more string like yarn. Usually (I think) they are known as 4 ply yarn? Not the same as 4 wt yarn.
@gaylescovel73085 ай бұрын
Ps, ofcourse try to match fibers if poss.

I run waaaay too HOT, to cover my shoulders in the summer. I have to dress down as far as I dare to keep from heat stroke and at the same time not scare folks. I was a kid in the sixties so I don't notice how short dresses are. I was a teen in the seventies and the skirts and dresses got longer. So having seemed to have seen it all, that fashion doesn't shock me. Although I have been scratching my head when I see people wearing holes in their clothes. THAT did not happen in my era. Anyway I do think that your suggestions are helpful. Thanks for talking yarn with us. 😉

Great ideas, but you shouldn't need to explain in the beginning. Women should just wear what they want unapologetically. The faster people stop prefacing with an explanation, the faster people will stop expecting one.
@aksez2u5 ай бұрын
I think those disclaimers are important. Otherwise, creators can expect a lot of both well-meaning and nasty comments. Disclaimers help head those off. I don't think there's any "The faster people stop..." There's an endless supply of know-it-alls out there. 😉
