Also, I am in advertising for large pharma companies and I *promise* you this went through tons of reviews and checks within Cult Crew before it ever made it to Vans and then they would have had their own approval process before it was approved for distribution to the public. Given that snake looks in bad shape to basically someone who knows next to nothing about reptiles, I cannot believe that no one thought that snake looked bad. Nothing looks healthy about it. Not surprised Vans didn’t acknowledge, that’s pretty typical in corporate marketing. Honestly, even if someone did raise a flag, depending on how much the photoshoot cost the Client may have decided it wasn’t worth it to them to re-shoot and made the production company work with what they had.

I'm a reptile guy and a reefkeeping guy. We use halogens and super powerful LEDs for corals that are probably inefficient enough to be covered as well. There are workarounds for heat lamps, but there is no way to produce enough PAR for corals super efficiently. There's no way they can pass this, right?

Unless you have a very big tank with one big light it shouldn't be a problem. An AI Prime only uses a max of 55 watts.

Just throwing this out there for folks. I’m not ONE HUNDRED PERCENT sure, but a couple of options. Chick bulbs at farm stores. Not sure if/how they are affected, but I have seen more incandescent bulbs there than in pet stores recently. And second, I imagine this does not affect heat emitters. UVB is still gonna be a problem, but we have ceramic heat emitters and deep heat projectors. For now, anyway. Like I said, doesn’t help with UVB, but… at least we can keep them warm. :-/

I think the bearded dragons would be attracted to the light and a heat emitter doesn't produce light, so how would the dragon know it's there? I'm not 100% but just my thoughts.

They often times sell higher wattage red bulbs, but maybe there are normal white bulbs there. Cermaic heat emitters wont work, they produce primarily IR-C, reptiles need IR-A for their bodies to properly warm up. IR-C is too weak

I agree, I don’t think they get it as MUCH without the light cluing them in. But I think they still understand that warmth feels good. Kind of like how they “snuggle” humans. It’s a stop gap measure. :-(

The UVB on the Zoomed document is a compact model. It is possible, maybe even likely, that the linear tube UVB bulbs are okay. My Arcadia shade dweller does not produce much heat at all.

The various pet hobby subreddits can be either super helpful and wholesome or totally self-absorbed cess pits, with little in between.

That reddit is really aggressive to people who are newbies and they call anything they don't agree with abusive. They call snake discovery abusive for keeping snakes in bins, and I've seen people claim they are hoarders even though they are running a business with employees 🙄 it's so ridiculous. If you look at their rules they have entire guidelines for ball python care. I do find it useful especially for anyone who is looking for resources. But I quickly left the group when I saw them bashing people for using heat pads or placing probes in ways they didn't agree with even though there are multiple ways to do it.

As to the lightbulb thing… I feel like there’s a lot of confusion on every level. When this ban was first passed (years ago), I read into the legislation. I absolutely read that bulbs used for agriculture or animal husbandry were exempt (even those multicolored, incandescent bulbs from Party City were exempted as “specialty lighting”, for that matter). Now, it’s interesting to note that we’re only hearing about these product recalls from Zoo Med. Not Arcadia, Exoterra, or any other reptile (or poultry/animal husbandry) brand. This (along with some of the statements from Zoo Med themselves) leads me to believe that the problem lies in the way Zoo Med has been labeling or marketing their bulbs. No matter what, major zoological facilities and conservation programs are going to need effective ways to heat and care for their reptiles. As they say: “something’s gotta give”. This may be a supply hiccup, but it isn’t an end to basking/heating bulbs. Especially since the poultry industry (which represents a MASSIVE part of U.S. agriculture) depends very much on these types of bulbs to operate. Short(er) version: basking/heat bulbs CAN’T be blanket-banned without causing the collapse of the poultry industry in the U.S., and that’s not going to happen. On top of that, every AZA accredited zoo and conservation program that keeps reptiles would be imperiled, and that’s also not going to fly. I suspect the Zoo Med product cancellations have a lot more to do with Zoo Med’s labeling or marketing of their bulbs, as the legislation I read clearly exempted bulbs used in agriculture and animal husbandry of all kinds.

yeah, cornsnakes don't use UVb, but it is ok to offer it to them. some people see behavior changes, but many don't see it when it is used. I do like to offer my snakes a vitamin mix around breeding season about once a month

It's the same with blue tongue skinks. UVB is not 100% required thing for them but it's just a good thing to do and it lights up the enclosure more.

I can't find incandescent light globes at the place I used to buy them from for my beardie. Everything there is now led light globes, which produce cold light and not warmth. This is really sad for reptile keepers.

As someone of a non-traditional religious persuasion, I ran into this same kind of bullying years before I rediscovered my love of reptiles. I wish I had a good answer for it, but there really isn't one. Some people are unwilling to learn and may as well be children regardless of age. After that, it's a matter of what your time is worth. Just like with discussions of religion and politics, it's a delicate balance between ensuring that an extremist isn't seen as speaking for the group and husbanding your own mental health. I really need to send one of those emails, though. Since I live in Wyoming, our senators will likely be swayed by discussion of its impact on bulbs that are the equivalent of if not identical to the ones used for raising livestock, which are essential in such a ranch-heavy state. Animal Husbandry is such an obvious category that either ours were missed and just need to be moved over or any number of congresspeople from farming states really fell down on their jobs.

So here's an idea for everyone to look into instead of using heat bulbs and heat mats you can use a candle heater the animals know how close they can get to it without hurting themselves, simply take precautions about the base and the top of the candle, essentially ventilation directly above the heater.

Pet groups in general seem to do a lot of that. I was in a few guinea pig groups on FB, as well as a few reptile groups, and they could get horrible with the name calling and crap. I switched to Reddit since Facebook is 90% sponsored posts these days and have found the handful of snake groups I'm in aren't too bad, but the metal music groups are horrendous and I ended up leaving a bunch of them.

First, I really appreciate your content. I don't have any reptiles now, but did in the past (a couple geckos, a pair of Jackson's Chameleons, my family had an iguana, and I babysat a red tail boa for a year while someone was in the military) and want to again the future. I've learned so much from your videos. Second- reddit is full of trolls, even the helpful subs. It's probably 50% entertainment and stupidity, 30% random stuff, and maybe 20% actual helpful information depending on how well moderated the sub is (and if the moderators are actually knowledgeable). Reddit is best talen with a heaping spoonful of salt. But I agree that every hobby has it's bullies/gatekeepers and wish ot could be better. Great video, all important topics imo. Especially the last one. I am explicitly not active in any reptile communities because of how toxic people in this community can be. I joined a leopard gecko discord server at one point, posted in the wholesome chat one day that I was so excited because I was connecting with my mother-in-law over Snake Discovery videos and I got jumped on lmfao. "We don't support them here blah blah blah they're animal abusers". Which, that in and of itself is a preposterous sentence. And then they went on about different reasons they believe they're animal abusers. 🙄Like lord I wasn't here for this drama, why can't we just move along if we don't have something nice to say? I don't know why people always say if you're the boss everything is your responsibility. One of the main functions of the corporate structure is to shield people from accountability. Those bastards get away w murder on a daily basis. Actually, instead of accountability, whenever the shit hits the fans, they're given huge compensation packages.

To me it’s mind blowing that someone can learn one piece of information and think it’s biblical. They won’t seek out supporting information or look at the opposing argument, they just run with it and if someone else disagrees they just attack them. I’ve seen it in the reptile hobby but also in the car hobby. It’s ok to have a difference of how things should be done but have a discussion about it without belittling the other.

I shoot photos with my snakes occasionally. I set up my studio lighting, and the human models have their makeup and wardrobe ready before I pull out the snakes. I watch my scale babies to stress, and if they show any signs, back they go into their enclosures. Also I use manual focus so I'm not stressing them out with IR from autofocus.... and I'm just an amateur. These pros should know better.

The biggest problem with the bulbs is some law maker is making money on the led lights or some energy commission so they say hey I know let's regulat the power consumption and call it energy efficient eavan tho leds burn out in less then a year as far as the vans add its despicable probley was an employees snake and the company figured it was cheaper to go with that poor snake instead of hiring a snake expert

There's lots of signs out there now that the state/media/academia are going to go after all us pet owners. Reasons being - need to look after the climate and the risks of invasive species. As a Fishkeeper myself, I've noticed the uptick by the media that keeing pets is to be frowned upon. They are trying to make us feel guilty 😩 Meanwhile... those at the top will continue life as per normal 😡

There is a huge difference between constructive criticism and being disrespectful. The whole point of communities such as this one should be about helping each other take care of our animals by offering advice, recommending great products etc. All the bullying and bickering is so unnecessary and does not help anyone. Also, the ad campaign with the royal (or ball) python breaks my heart as I am a proud owner of one of these beautiful snakes. Have an amazing day everyone and be awesome to each other 😊

I'm guessing Vans has no clue about snakes or anything and I don't think it was like a direct order from the executive owner of Vans to make a professional commercial for the shoe brand and most people don't know anything about snakes so if somebody brought a dehydrated abused snake for a shoot most people aren't going to know what's going on
