Discord Lite is an impressive third-party client that is capable of running on super old versions of Mac OS X. So today I thought I'd pull out my old iMac G4 to try it out!

We had that exact iMac G4 in the latter half of high school. Loved that thing, especially since it ran OS 9 natively so my games ran much better than in OS X.

I daily drive a PowerBook G4 1.67 GHz 17” model and run Discord Lite on it. It’s cool how I can still communicate with my friends even with using my 19 years old laptop.

Given that, IIRC, vanilla Discord on desktop runs over top the behemoth that is Electron it would be beneficial to have more OS-native solutions for performance and stability.

This sounds like it's more capable than the old version I have on an older tablet because that one cannot reply to messages but can @ them at least. It also has no tenor integration either, but I work around that by manually keying in tenor gif addresses.

i personally use regularly Discord Lite on my old MacBook Air 11" from 2010 running High Sierra (which, even tho it does officially support Discord, it's REALLY slow so...), and even tho i don't use much often and it does lack some features like calling, it's still a great way to rapidly check your bud sending you screenshot of him completing Geometry Dash tracks

i recommend installing linux on such a laptop, i personally have a macbook air 2012 that can work all basic tasks as well as some less intensive gaming really well, i personally use debian and xfce

@cmposting yeah, i eventually installed EndervourOS (arch-based) with KDE Plasma and, although it didn't solve all of my issues, i feel like it's a pretty fair trade-off for performance in exchange for an up to date system

Hmm... looks like a Python library is available for the Discord API. And since Python can run on a Raspberry Pi, and you can connect a Pi through serial to an old retro computer, you could theoretically use something like a Commodore 64 (admittedly using it like a dumb terminal) to chat on Discord. Or you could use a Pocket PC, or an Apple II, or a TI 99/4A...

@@dosdude1 I mean, I generally like it, but ... to declare a property you need to declare an ivar, a property, sythesize - this tripes the amount of code for one variable; not to mention all the weird exceptions that may occur out of nowhere.

@@gargamel3478 Funnily enough, properties were introduced with Mac OS X 10.5, so for a program targeting 10.4 or older, you can't use them. You just declare an instance variable and appropriate getter and setter methods, as you would in most other object-oriented languages. Also, newer compiler/Xcode versions will automatically synthesize properties if you use them, so declaring a property in most cases only involves a single line of code. The single property declaration takes the place of the instance variable, getter, and setter methods.

Personally, I have a big bug bear with the login screen, but not for the obvious "Well, I don't know if I trust this app with my password" reason: What if Discord starts enforcing Two-Factor Authentication? Or what if you WANT to use it with a 2FA-protected account? I hope that a future version supports OAuth2 for sign-ins, precisely to allow 2FA-protected logins.

Really wish people would specify why someone would get banned from using a client mod and how to prevent being banned, instead of just saying "you may get banned from using this". The article you showed did state why, being that the guy abused API calls that wouldn't happen on a normal client, but he also wasn't actively using it either so..? Weird. But anyways, I'd use plugins that only affect you and/ or other people using that mod and plugin.

Apparently, what can get you banned is performing one of four actions with incorrect "super properties" header set: Sending or accepting friend requests, and creating or joining servers. Discord Lite SHOULD have correct super properties header implemented (unless they changed this recently, which is unlikely), and also doesn't have any ability to perform the aforementioned actions. So Discord Lite causing your account to get banned realistically is highly unlikely, but I suppose it is still a small possibility. I have tested Discord Lite throughout its entire development with my own main account, and have never had an issue.

I got so excited when I saw Discord Lite existed, but got a bit disappointed when I saw it doesn't support Windows. I can definitely get this to run on my PowerMac G3 Mirrored Door, but I really want it running on my Dell Optiplex gx280 with Windows XP. Maybe in the future... Very glad this exists though, if I decide to keep that Mac instead of sell it I'll definitely run this. Maybe we'll get Telegram in the future LOL.
