This is a sound idea, but just not practical for ATV use as I don't have room to carry anchors that large and definitely not a large drill such as that. One trip through a water hole and the drill would be a duster. I've settled on using dog lead anchors that are compact enough for storage and the twist rate per inch is very aggressive yet they are easily removed. I also carry a snatch block to double winch line weight of pull.

Understood and agree. There are certainly some opportunities to improve using anchors from a practical standpoint. The driver presents a challenge as high torque is required which is not easily obtained. Some use an impact but my limited experience with these is they are slower and are much harder on the tooling. For smaller vehicle recovery even having anchors large enough to provide, say 500 lbs of holding force can be adequate to keep things moving. Actually anything that can provide more than what a person can by pushing or pulling can be worthwhile. Thanks for watching and sharing your experiences and thoughts.

I always thought that it would be a good idea to pack an auger post hole digger & a 4"" pipe to drop in that hole & it should provide a good anchor.

Thanks for watching. Yes, a 4" pipe 3-4' deep would be a great anchor for horizontal pulls. Good idea!

Cool I've been thinking of something like this for dirt or sand. But drilled straight down then another 6". Using 2 rods then criss crossed like an A. Not having a 4x4 and thinking of moving to higher elevation with snow/mud worried about getting stuck as mountains usually have rocks so no drilling there. Then if a tree or rock was available having just a rope and 3 prefabbed 10" spikes or c channel that could be installed to the rear rim with 3 lug nuts. The spikes would stick out for a rope to grab and wind onto lift it out No winch, rods or drilling needed.

Thank you good test. You should compare different anchoring systems. This is plenty to get my large Ford Transit 250 extended RV van out of a ditch.

Thanks for watching and the suggestion. I think ground anchors are an underutilized option for a lot of situations especially for vehicle recovery. I saw an old army book entry for using them after doing more research so it certainly is not unknown but I don't see it used often. I would think it would be one of the "go-to" methods in many cases especially in sandy terrain where trees or other objects are not readily available.

I think soil condition would be a major factor in the success or failure of any ground anchoring system. I built a similar system like this one: kzbin.info/www/bejne/poGyiq2ZbZlkbtk Probably wouldn't work well in beach sand but I've yet had a need to use it. Doesn't require anything more than a 3lb hammer to set the rods. They had much larger rods and a tree to use with snatch blocks but with my design, neither is requried for light to medium recoveries such as ATVs and UTVs.

Thanks for watching and yes, soil conditions have the greatest effect on results and will dictate the type and depth required to achieve a given resistance force. Unfortunately the only currently accepted method of determining actual ability of an anchor system to hold a certain force it is to pull test it at the location and under the same conditions (e.g. ground saturation conditions and and disturbances.)

Does the tractor still have the turbo in use? Would it be worth doing again? My 1.3L Diesel is about to get the VZ21. Thanks

Yes. That was a fun project and I hope you’ll enjoy the installation too. Are you planning on increasing the pump delivery?

@@Ilikeurtractor Yes, did read for that. My altitude is at 7000' I will just turn down if it blows smoke. My biggest issues are reducing my exhaust to the small turbo then the tail pipe not interfering with my front bucket arm. I plan on going downward with tail pipe. Big question: this turbo has port for water cooling and oil port. Did you use the water or just block off?

Thanks for watching. There are some other ideas I’m working on with the same concept that can hopefully be useful too. Look forward to more videos on these.

Very interesting experiment. I would imagine if you spread the anchors out, their holding force would be slightly higher. That's because with them adjacent, they are pulling on the same soil. I picture the shear stress in the ground looking like a bullseye, you don't want the bullseyes to overlap.

Thanks for watching! I agree with your suggestion and conclusion and plan on re-visiting this one day with some things I've learned since this video that make the concept more effective.
