@bsidethebox
@bsidethebox 3 ай бұрын
@@TheBawlz09It can, especially if you've got mixed woods. Used hot sand when making a natural "cat tree", to fit some branches into holes in a thick plank base. Neither the branches nor the base were fully dry, but they were different woods and different levels of wet. The project is over 6 feet tall, and far too awkward to turn over to do any wedging. Three of the four branches dried up fine, one needed a bit of love (aka glue) dribbled into the join where it loosened as everything dried.

I adore all the woodworking techniques that utilize the wood itself, geometry, and or other clever yet aesthetically pleasing methods for locking together structures like furniture without using metal and plastic for nails/rivets/screws. There is something extremely satisfying about a totally natural object that is functional, attractive, and totally impermanent once you choose it to be. Those chairs like you showed could last decades,however you could also toss them in a compost and back to the earth they go. I yearn for a world where men reincorporated this back into our world and useless trash no longer strangles every corner of every unused street. *I loath our permanent trash world.*
@CoperliteConsumer
@CoperliteConsumer 4 ай бұрын
Some might argue that metal isn't permanent trash but I'd argue it's the exact crutch that led us to plastic. Looking at the way most things were made 1,000 years ago where iron and bronze existed but were so expensive it was only used for tool heads and knives by common folk we saw them solve EVERY issue using these super effective and totally natural/non destructive ways. They also created a hurdle that sparked creativity and this we saw had countless times resulted in art being born such as the Japanese method of building a folding wooden pillow(small stool) from a single log of wood that folds up and is all interconnected and utterly gorgeous while looking like it must be made of many glued parts. However it wasn't! Those I think I adore the most.

Love the video you can also make the peg end slightly bigger than the hole and soak it in water to make the wood softer and squishy then use mallet or hammer and bang it into the hole then let it dry. Fun fact: sand is made of the same material as Silica Gel, the stuff in those packets in all your packages and food. They're used to keep things dry because they suck up all the water in the air. That hot sand trick is like the original form of this.
@jaredlancaster4137
@jaredlancaster4137 7 ай бұрын
It's the same material, but silica gel works because of its microstructure rather than because of any inherent dessicant properties of silica. Sand does not dry anything, and this works because of the heat, not because of the sand.

The hot sand isn't to absorb moisture, it's just a clean way to distribute heat. The moisture can float off into the air just fine.

To prevent future mortice tool breakages you either need your work lower or stand on a block or stool so you can better stabilise your tools to ensure the only movement is the rotation you control as you cut without any additional side to side movements that caused the break

So quick question…if the mortise shrinks while it dries, wont it constrict in all directions meaning the hole would get bigger? I’m seriously not trying to be a jerk, just very green when it comes to wood.

I came to the comments to ask the same. Seems like the wood would shrink out from the cut hole, making the hole larger, no? I’m also truly interested in learning the science behind why I’m wrong about that.

For bonus points, Ms Lyndsy Doyle would doak nicely into the enon whilst it's dry, seep into the mortise as it dries and glue the joint as it hardens. I've seen people use a good oil soak on hammer/axe handles to keep the head good and tight and the wood fibres nice and flexible

Once had an old book about chair making. They would dry the tenon material by weighing the sticks until they stopped dropping weight and then make the tenon on dry and the mortise on green so that the the mortise would shrink and lock the tenon and the tenon would gain moisture from the environment (drying in fall/winter and construction in spring).
