I love how KDE is extremely customisable but I must say, for me, the way KDE works by default is already about how I expect a desktop to work (minus single-click-to-open being the default... never understood that). And much of the bugs and glitches people used to complain about have been fixed in recent versions of Plasma, there seems to be a real surge in KDE development lately. Touchpad gestures however is definitely a sore spot! The lack of touchpad gestures, and the fact *only* KDE has problems with my laptop's Wi-Fi card for some reason, are the only things blocking me from properly using KDE on my laptop. But on my desktop, KDE is what I use full time.
@Vinnie_PT3 жыл бұрын
I don't think the WiFI card issue is due to KDE, the drivers are in the Kernel, not the DE. Have you tried another distro with a recent kernel? Something like Manjaro or Fedora?

@@Vinnie_PT I use Fedora (and used to use openSUSE). The issues with Wi-Fi quite literally only happen when I connect to the network via KDE's GUI for some reason, it just errors out telling me the network cannot be found or that authorisation timed out. I can usually get around it using NetworkManager-tui, but these issues have never happened on GNOME. Very strange!
@onesandzeroes3 жыл бұрын
The single-click idea is very logical - you work in the same way offline as online (after all you don't have too double-click links on the internet; nor do you need to double-tap icons on your phone to run an app). It's also easier to single-click than double-click, isnt' it? The prroblem is people are too much used to double-clicking on the desktop. And then they would have to get used to a different way of selecting. In a perfect world, it would all be unified, but the world is far from perfect (think about miles and inches, fahrenheits and all the other abominations - the world is messy because people won't give up their old habits).

In most cases you really do not need a reboot. It depends a bit on what gets updated. If it's a KDE update, logging out and back in is enough. If it's an app update - no need to update. Likewise with most system libraries. As an example, on our office servers we run updates once a week, with reboots probably once a month (again depending on the actual updates). On our Internet-facing servers its the same, unless it's a critical zero-day emergency update - you can find out if there is one by subscribing to your distros security bulletin.

I took an older laptop and put Linux on it. Works perfectly with PCLinuxOS, after testing several distros. (Windows was terrible on it). My son was used to Chrome OS but Linux is much more robust. Working on Linux, bah. I'm an accountant, specialist in UK tax, and I need access to not only my work system, but legislation, tax cases, spreadsheet and word processing. I also work from home a lot. My laptop connects to my work VPN, and then uses remote desktop to connect to my Windows 10 work system. My main desktop uses synergy to connect to my laptop, so single keyboard and mouse (separate monitors, though, so not quite a KVM setup). I can print from the remote desktop to my home printer, and I have a shared driver between the remote and home (which I really miss when I go into the office). When I'm not thumbing through Tolleys legislation in paper books, I can access from my desktop (much faster than the RD/VPN), and tax cases. I can copy and paste, not just between laptop (to the VPN) but between laptop and desktop. The bottom line is, I'm working on a proprietary Windows system from Arch Linux, on two home machines, with full interchangeable control between all, and a single hardware keyboard/mouse, and I'm doing it faster and more stably than if I was sat in front of my work computer.

Yeah-yeah, we all know about Evolution with exchange plug-in, but damn it's far from being perfect, and it unlikely to have any competitors. I was trying Outlook Web Access, but Microsoft purposely hide all notifications there, so if you didn't see them, you didn't see them. Apple did a very good job to adapt their email/calendar apps for Microsoft Outlook, but nothing on Linux is comming close to any reliable work with Outlook, at least nothing from what I tried so far.

You can use libinput-gestures to use three and four finger gesture controll under KDE Plasma. ~/.config/libinput-gestures.conf write something like this: gesture swipe right 3 xdotool key ctrl+super+Right gesture swipe left 3 xdotool key ctrl+super+Left gesture swipe left 4 xdotool key shift+alt+Tab gesture swipe right 4 xdotool key alt+Tab gesture swipe up 3 xdotool key super gesture swipe down 3 xdotool key super gesture swipe down 4 xdotool key super+Down gesture swipe up 4 xdotool key super+Up and wake libinput-gestures up by libinput-gestures-setup start or libinput-gestures-setup autostart this setting use xdotool to emulate key press with your touchpad gestures, so make sure to set your corresponding keyboard shortcut as well (and install xdotool).

You and I are a lot alike in that we both use Linux as a work desktop. However, as an application developer I don't like scaling. Basically this means blowing up your application draw size so that it thinks it has a smaller resolution display than what it actually has. This blocks the application from effectively making use of the true resolution of the display, and it converts your high resolution display into a lower resolution display. As in you wasted your money buying a high DPI display and are effectively throwing the extra resolution in the trash. The correct answer is to give the applications the full resolution of the display. Its up to the app to correctly use and scale its graphics for the display. For example most resolution adaptable apps calculate, say, 1/3 or 1/4 of the display for the default window size, then let you set it after that. Fonts are done properly by calculating the point sizes in ACTUAL DISPLAY terms, that is, 1/72 of an inch. Once the typeface is set to be readable, most of the rest of the graphical layout follows from that. Now of course in the real world, many or even most of the displays, in both Xwindows and Windows, do NOT report accurate screen geometry, making it impossible to calculate true point sizes, and most "resolution adapting" apps have seen on Linux work by just allowing you to scale the entire window at once (as opposed to calculating the layout). However, these bad practices, and including having the app not adapt to screen resolution AT ALL (app looks like a postage stamp). However, scaling isn't really helping this, since it applies a band-aid to the problem and does nothing to force app makers to code their display presentation properly. To be fair, both XWindows and Window mess up the implementation of high DPI displays equally badly. Not an excuse.

That's really awesome news that kde serves you so well for your job! One question, are you on the Wayland or Xorg sessions on your 2 machines? And have you ever had problems with Manjaro's updates for a work machine?

KDE rocks. But realistically, most can use a Chromebooks for work, and therefore can use any Linux distro for work. The only real use case I have for desktop apps is RAW image processing. Everything else can be done in the cloud. This is the age of edge computing.

I’ve thought about doing the same but I’m concerned about privacy. My job gives us a thinkbook t420 with a terrible webcam and I have to use the company vpn to access a lot of our systems. I tried using a VM on my personal windows machine using mint as my VM district but I couldn’t get the webcam pass through working. My thoughts now is to buy a separate laptop on my own for work and put a Debian based distro on it like Zorin since there is a package for the vpn software that my company uses and a lot of the company’s who own the tools that we use have deb packages. I love Manjaro it’s my favorite distro but the vpn service my company uses doesn’t only has .exe .deb or dmg files. Is this a good approach? They do allow me to use a personal machine. I keep thinking that if I use a personal machine and log into the VPN to access our file server or to access specific sites that they’re also monitoring what I do. I don’t know how to confirm this though. Am I overthinking this? I was thinking of getting the framework laptop but the battery life on that isn’t great.

Great video, Nick. I switched to Manjaro/KDE at the top of the month and I really do like it. a warning, back up the data on your macbook, they notoriously have flaws with frying the SSD and failing hardrive cables and sautered on storage. better to back it up then lose your data

@@TruthDoesNotExist I've been repairing macs for 31 years and they haven't had this problem. Soldered on storage always sucks, and thankfully my macs predate that. You should always keep your data backed up, but macs are not more or less prone to SSD failures than any other manufacturer.

@@meowcula they put the 12v power line next to the 5v power for the ssd, if a liquid is spilled on it then it will get fried, but you said your mac predates that do thats good, if the hardrive cables fail then you can just move the storage to another computer. @@TruthDoesNotExist You aren't supposed to spill liquid on your mac. Or any computer for that matter. Try it on any windows machine/SSD and see what happens. That's not an argument. 9:50 That's odd because I use global menu to give me more screen real estate. Since I never need the icons on the task switcher widget on the bottom panel to be glanceable, I move everything but that from the bottom to the top panel, set the bottom panel to auto hide, make the top panel super thin, and that gives me more screen real estate, especially when I have multiple windows open and visible at the same time that would have otherwise had their copy of their own menu bar inside their own windows. And since I never need to interact with the menu bar of an inactive window, I should need to have one click access to it and have it take up valuable screen space.
