Using Live Mullet Offshore | How Well Do They Work?

One of my favorite baits to use offshore is Mullet. Using live Mullet offshore during the fall Mullet run is a great way to quickly fill up the live well. We headed out of St Lucie Inlet on Florida's Treasure Coast for a morning of reef fishing. Fishing bottom rigs with long light flourobcarbon leader and flat lines with live Mullet , we were ready. A few Dolphin aka Mahi Mahi came into our spread and we were able to boat the couple that we saw using live Mullet. After that we focused on finding Mutton Snapper a were able to catch some using a combination of live Mullet and butterflied Threadfin Herring. We fished depths from 75 feet to 180 feet finishing off the day catching a few Vermillion Snapper AKA B-Liners to finish off a nice box of fish.

Thats cool you can go catch your bait before you go fishing. Cannot do that here. All we get for live bait is worms and leeches haha. Cool looking fish! That orange one at the end looks awesome.

Looked like a successful trip out there for both of you with some fish for supper. Started off hectic with the double header. I your opinion, which one of those 2 fish that you cleaned tastes better?

Depends how you cook them. Personally Mutton tastes better but can’t go wrong with Mahi. Especially fresh on a sandwich.
