GREAT PRESENTATION, from Nico! The super-wide angles are much more difficult to work with than the longer lenses and/or top-hat solution. With the Schneider 47mm XL, I simply use the Walker Titan 45 XL with the bag bellows, but I think Cameradactyl now has an even better solution with its fixed focal length cone-cameras. We always look forward to your shows, Nico.

I bought a 3"x3" (ca. 75mm) diameter aluminum mixing cup from my local kitchen shop for $5, cut the bottom off and welded the cylinder to an old lensboard, making a "top hat" extension for my Nikkor 300mm F/9 M lens, which focuses at infinity. The weld was done with some 4,000-lb. test epoxy/sintered metal called "JB Weld" (Ace Hardware in US). I finished the exterior with wrinkle finish black enamel and the interior with ultra-black spray paint. Top hats with shiny black anodized interiors cause flare in strongly backlit scenes.

Best option is a strong and big camera but its not always easy to take out in the field. This will help a bit with smaller and lighter cameras.

Niko! Thank you for this video. I was just thinking about selling that exact camera so I could access wide angle lenses via bag bellows. Can you tell me if the recessed lens board technique will work all the way wide with Schneider 47mm f/5.6 Super Angulon XL? It would be perfect if I could stick with this camera while collecting outstanding lenses, then upgrade the camera down the road. Also, I'm mainly going to be using the horseman 6x12 back.

Looking to put a Rodenstock 75 4.5 on my intrepid but am very new to the whole recessed board thing. If I want slight front tilt ability etc and the ability to get my fingers in there to adjust shutter speed aperture etc...what kind of lens board am I looking to get? I see a lot of people complaining about adjusting their settings once the lens is mounted. Can’t afford a crazy linhof recessed board for like 700 dollars lol...

Hi Nico, very nice video. I have maybe a stupid question: instead using a top-hat, can you use a different base hole? I have to specify I have the Intrepid 8x10 camera and a Fuji 250mm f6.3 and sometimes using the "right" base hole, is difficult focusing the far away subjects, so I found the trick using a shorter hole.

I have a Shen hao TFC 45-II B and want to shoot at 300mm, is that possible with a "lens hat". are there "lens hats" longer than 50mm?
@andyvan5692
@andyvan5692 2 жыл бұрын
great explination of these tools, but you also forgot one system, linhof use a "focus adaptor",which goes onto the standard, then the lens goes on it, allowing the 65mm ultra-wide lenses to focus. one notable use of the screw-in lens shutters is in the Alpha TC cameras, as they have a helical focussing system, but this is how it mounts to the camera, with the tubes specific to lens focal length.

Interesting... Didn't even know those "top hat" adapters were a thing. However, I kinda wish there was a version that didn't require re-mounting the lens onto a different board. (I don't have any lenses too long for my 4x5" under normal conditions, but I had to switch from 210mm down to 150mm to get enough extension the last time I tried macro.)

you could attach a lens board adapter onto the front of a top hat adapter.

Sería compatible el montante trasero con accesorios de la cambo mide? O con respaldo de 6×9 de linhof para 4x5?
@NicosPhotographyShow
@NicosPhotographyShow 4 жыл бұрын
La trasera es compatible con el sistema graflock asi que si admite chasis de formato medio y similares. Pero si es algo propietario de la marca, vease visores reflex y similares entonces casi 100% seguro que no.

I have a 65mm Super Angulon . Do you think that would work okay with a 20mm recessed board.I am not expecting to be able to use much camera movement. Many thanks.
@NicosPhotographyShow
@NicosPhotographyShow 4 жыл бұрын
I think it should work, they (Intrepid) claim a 75mm can be used. So a 65mm on 20mm should work. Worst case it will only be a few dollars on a board if it doesnt work. I have a 65mm but dont own a recessed board for the 65mm.

@NicosPhotographyShow

I haven't tested a 75mm but one could use a bit of shift to counteract it. I wouldn't suggest the Intrepid as the best option for wider shots.

@rupunzel6299

Root problem is in the designed in limitations of the Intrepid view camera. Top hat lens board alters the lens node which affects the way camera movements are rendered when used. Once a top hat lens board with longer than normal focal length lens installed the once lightweight and compact Intrepid is no longer so lightweight or compact any more.. Recessed lens board insets the lens allowing the camera to focus, this does NOT allow much camera movement and it is possible the front bed of the camera will appear in the images made. It all goes back to the problem of deciding on a camera first without proper consideration to the image goals and the lenses required to achieve these image making goals. Camera choice should be far down on the list of image making choices. As the skills and ability of the view camera image maker grows, can demands placed on the camera/lens/film&film format/camera support system and print making system. While it is great the Intrepid has introduced many to the world of LF view cameras, it remains a entry level camera in every way with specific limitations. At some point some of these image makers grow out of their Intrepid and move on to far more capable view cameras based on the lenses and image goals they have chosen.
