Using Loomis Method to Draw the Head in 3/4 View

Can you tell me how do you determine the centre line like where to place between the brows

Thabk you for your question. If you are drawing from life or a photo, you can use proportional measuring and or sighting. If drawing from you imagination. I would suggest using Loomis and watching how to construct the head and centerline. I have 3 to 4 videos using Loomis.

This was a video to cover the basic approaches for people beginning to draw 3/4 heads likeness isn't the goal for this one. Getting used to the process is, I am glad you enjoyed working through the process.

Good stuff. I'm curious, I use the grid method with photos and meticulously check my distances. Is the Loomis method better for any reason ? Maybe it has a better use for real life poses ?? I'm about to start my journey on Loomis soon so would like to know the pros/cons of each method. Thanks for sharing.

Thank you for watching and commenting on the video. I can't see any cons to Loomis per say. It's one of the best methods I know of for drawing portraits without gridding. The pros for the approach is if you are drawing from life or imagination it will help you construct great heads very quickly. Best of luck on your drawing journey.

Very difficult to see your marks of the paper. I don’t understand how you decided where to put the eclipse for the side plain-how high up or down?

The ellipse represent the side of the head. The outside of the touches where the eye cavity ends or the outside corner of the eye cavity, not the corner of the eye, but the entire cavity for the eye on the skull. That is the corner we are looking for. You then look at the head to locate the top or crown of the hear stops and the side of head starts. These are the landmarks the ellipse is supposed to mark.

Thank you for your time and talent. Showing different ways to draw a portrait and especially the loomis methis is great. My only complaint about your finished drawing is if you draw a straight line from the top of the ear all the way across to the eyes. The top of the ear is the same height as the top of her eye folds under her brow. Your drawing's ear is hanging too low..

Hello Dana, I apreciate you pointing that out. You are correct! Usually I would check and tripple check the alignments. But that would have made the video much longer! This is to just to start to.get a feel for drawing the 3/4 view. I will have other videos where we will push to the next level and beyond. I appreciate your comment!

@@KevinMcCainStudios yes Sir. I can understand you have to start somewhere. Once you get pencil to paper if one wanted to push it to the next level then you can make corrections. With the video you wanted to show how you can get the jist of the portrait on paper with the 3/4 view. Awesome
