Remember: Glowing is the same as releasing light energy and this means a source of other energy is required. In this video, the glowing effect is from the reaction, so the glowing effect definitely will go off when the reaction is totally finished. Don't think it can last forever

Also, think about where we're getting the chemicals from. We have to manufacture it, and that uses energy too.

This is a reaction that occurs when the luminol loses who hydrogen and nitrogen atoms, and gains oxygen atoms. The electrons in the oxygen atoms get "excited" (jump to lower electron shells), resulting in this photonic light source. This however, is only temporary because the electrons should eventually stop producing photon energy.

i’m not a chemist, i just find science and chemistry very interesting so i can’t say everything 100% accurately, but as a true crime junkie i also know luminol is often used to detect blood as well. it’s often used in crime scenes. basically, it reacts with iron found in our blood which makes it glow. it’s really cool to see it used though bc even if it’s not obviously a spot, it can pick up any traces of where it might have been (so long as the scene hasn’t been cleaned with chemicals that destroy iron compounds in the blood) and depending on how concentrated the iron is, it will cause it to glow more or less. bc this was such a concentrated amount of the iron solution, that’s why it lit up so bright. it’s a really cool chemical tbh

Water + Sodium Carbonate + Luminol + Sodium Bicarbonate --> A Hydrogen Peroxide + Potassium Ferrocyanide --> B A + B --> Chemiluminescence
@duchongle1703 жыл бұрын
Roles of the chemicals in the video: Sodium carbonate and bicarbonate make alkaline buffer so the luminol can dissolve in water (it is a diprotic acid) and for the reaction to occur. Hydrogen peroxide: it oxidises luminol to form the lumiscence molecule. Potassium ferrocyanide: catalyst for the reaction. It kinds of simulate the iron-hemoglobin complex in blood.

this is actually how glow sticks work. they have one chemical mixture in thin glass tube, then the other mixture on the outside of that, then there is the plastic coating that keeps it all inside. when you clack a glow stick, you are breaking the glass tube inside, and letting the two chemicals mix; causing it to glow.

I'm no chemist, but hearing "Potassium Ferrocyanide" and seeing the comments saying the luminol reacts with the iron, I'm guessing this reaction just releases cyanide into the mixture. ... so it would be a bad idea to drink the glowy liquid?

luminol is also used by forensics to detect blood, because it reacts with the iron content in blood

The way it glows that neon bright blue in the dark. So pretty. Reminds me of that blue acid water from the Rotten Vale, from Monster Hunter. I always thought it was very pretty.
