This was perfect to start learning the functionality of Notion for a PhD literature review, research, and administrative workflow. Thank you for distilling the core aspects of processing and record-keeping -- I was seeing the ones with cute images and fussy trackers, but your focus on the process and the framework itself was the best look at the tool and the task!

The glossary database is a good idea. I`m going to use that too!

This is an excellent guide to Notion. Thank you! A few people had suggested it but I was struggling to get to grips with its functionality. Some practical ideas here to try straight away and I think this will be much better than the Google Doc set up I'd been using.

I'll be starting my PhD this September so that was very inspiring! I'm not sure I will use the same approach but I plan on using the "weekly log" and "timeline planner". Thanks for sharing :)

No problem and thanks for the comment. Glad you found it of use. One of the joys of Notion is the fact that you can tailor it to your needs and take or leave any aspects of it. I've progressed the Notes cards feature now and include a Dropbox link to the original file. The accompanying notes are now part of the whole project management content so that when I search for any terms in Notion these notes could be part of the search response. Note cards in Zotero or mendeley do the same but they're not part of any ongoing search mechanism unless I do them separately. Take care and good luck.

I'd love to know how you set up those Quick Notes. Been trying to replicate it with no success.

Hiya, thanks for viewing this and then getting in touch. Apologies for delay in response but only just seen this message. It's pretty simple and I'll try and explain without a diag...hover over a folder on the left so that the "+" sign appears. "Quickly add a page inside", title it "Quicknotes" and choose "Gallery" as the style of the content (under database). That's it really. I moved that Quicknotes to the top of the list and then on my phone I access Notion and click Quicknotes so that when I access it next time it's already there. Just Click Add to add a new note, then when back on the laptop I can go back in to the Quicknotes to see what needs adding more accurately.

@@benjane4933 Hey Ben, I love Notion, too. Nowadays all are migrating to Obsidian, I've watched a good 15hrs on Obsidian, but can't get myself to like it 5% as much as Notion :D I can't understand the hype. Having said this, only for one thing I would see it as superior, and that is PhD or thesis in general. But one could just use citavi(hope you know it) for literature management. What are your thoughts on Obsidian vs Notion vs Citavi ? Greetings from Germany
@benjane49332 жыл бұрын
@@Ematuresco Hey there and apologies for delayed response. Unfortunately I haven't got any thoughts on those other tools. I need an in-text citation tool and have just moved over to Zotero from Mendeley. Then I use Notion for taking notes and creating connections between content. I love the backlinks feature and the ability to create my own database of reading with bespoke tags that filter well.
