We wore a respirator because it stinks , we did it outside and you wear gloves when you scrub it. If you are worried about it definitely don’t use this technique.

once all the varnish is removed, try good old fashioned house hold bleach to lighten the wood and help dilute the dark stain...it is a good hack

Meh ... Seems like much ado about nothing. Five coats?!? I've never had to use more than two coats of any stripper even with 3-4 layers of paint. Thanks for showing this latest fad. As much as I hate the whole messy process, I'll stick with regular strippers. 🤷🏻‍♀️

What strippers have you used that git that deep on multiple layers? I have a piece that I'm seriously considering putting in the wood pile.

@@kayeyeager8006 hi Kaye! Sorry for the delayed response. I just saw this! I had stockpiled some of the old formula Citristrip that I'm still using. That works well for me - you just have to put a decent layer on and cover it with plastic so it stays wet while it's working. Klean Strip is a good one, too. That's what I used before Citristrip and I'll probably go back to it once I'm all out. I also have some stuff I bought on fb marketplace that is supposed to be really good. I haven't tried it yet but I'll come back and repost when I do if I like it.

Agree with the person below. A good stripper will easily do it in two applications. And oven cleaner is horribly toxic, just as toxic.

I wish you would have taped down the center and done a comparison with one ofthe "natural" strippers. Maybe next time.

I thought you had to neutralize the oven clean with a vinegar wash after cleaning it or the oven cleaner would be down in the grain and keep eating away at your wood?? Anyone know if that’s true?

I was super nervous about the shower!!! But I loved how the table turned out. Thank you for trying this out for us. I hate the goopiness of stripper so I might actually try this now that I've seen it done. Also, thank you for adding in the amount of coats you did, the wait time in between coats, and all the ways you tried to remove the old yuck(the brushes and the wool pad) All of those tips do matter to me when I'm watching DIY videos. They definitely save me from having to just "try them out and see what happens" myself. 😂

WARNING*** If you use this.. you have to cover the entire area, or it will show up where you sprayed the oven cleaner, and where you didn't. I just tried this on an exterior side of a front entry door, and I had to spray the entire door area so it would look consistent!

If the agent's health hazards aren't enough of a red flag, the harsh solution might also throw a wrench in wood DIY project before it truly begins. Oven cleaners will most definitely dry out wood, eventually resulting in splits and veneer separation, it's fair to expect a bleaching effect, as well, with oven cleaners. Instead turn to gel strippers that have "less splash, better accumulation, and are fairly inexpensive when working on any wooden pieces.

WOW.. the white oil wax really gives the wood a nice old wood look ! I’m surprised at the Oven Cleaner. So glad you guys tried it out for us ! I have been wondering if it really works…YUP it does! But oh the smell of over cleaner 😬. I’ve never used a stripper on wood before , so don’t know which one smells the worse! LOL!! Thanks for sharing 😁

It took you so long because You are supposed to do fume free and use water which reacts to the chemical that. I also left my piece out in the hot sun in between coats which really helped too

Can you show us your other white oil waxed items, especially if you did more than one coat? Pretty please? Since oven cleaner is toxic, I wonder if this is the better of two “evils” (stripper)? Great video!

Oven cleaner isn’t toxic, it’s just caustic. It’s lye, which is used to make soap sometimes.
@lesliejohnson7247
@lesliejohnson7247 2 жыл бұрын
@@cynthiafisher9907 Okay I read up on it. They’re poisonous, at least while they’re at their caustic potency. They say after they’ve been used and wiped off, they’re not toxic. Still and all, I don’t like the stuff, but I probably don’t like stripper either.

You have to use real easy off oven cleaner not off brand just saying I did this technique in the '70s and pulled off about 6 or 7 Layers of old paint easily and I didn't wipe anything back I rinse it off with a water hose
