@@paulreidphotography So do i. Film gives me freedom, not to chimp with anything digital via LCD display, shows you down, motivates you quite more than digital...and is by all means, more emotional, and a haptic medium. You do worry worlds more about your composition, about the quality of light...than with digital - because every frame counts, every frame costs. It's too precious, to waste.

The lessons learned from a father continue to shape us even after he's gone. Fathers often teach valuable life lessons about resilience, integrity, and compassion. These teachings become a part of who we are and guide us through the challenges we face. You, dear Paul, are the reason I purchased a Leica Q2 Monochrom. These moments serve as reminders to continue spreading kindness and making a positive impact wherever you go.

Sorry for your loss Paul, very sad for you. I spent 30 years in a high octane, high pressured job. A few years after retirement I still couldn’t fully switch off, so I took up photography as a hobby to decompress from the traumas I had witnessed. I now nearly always have a camera with me and I get so much joy, calm, and reflective time when I’m snapping … Best wishes mate … hope you find some peace and comfort soon … 😊 📷

My daughter is a high school photography teacher so I usually have her critique my work. I have several cameras and all are digital. Always loved film and it took me awhile to switch over to digital. Paul, I am sorry for for the loss of your father. Mine has been gone over 20 years now and I still feel the lessons that he taught me. You never totally get over the loss, but as you say, you celebrate the life and it brings happiness. Back in the day, I shot a lot of Tri-X and used Rodinal, but never in the way you described. Now that I live in this digital age, I am rediscovering black and white and quite like the effects that I can get in Lightroom. Photography is a great therapy and I use it for that when I am feeling down or have issues. Thank you so much for sharing your experiences in this way. I m not into street photography myself but I enjoy images such as yours that carry a message or a feeling. It is refreshing to see the lessons of photography and what it can do for us, rather than just more stuff about equipment. Thank you from a new subscriber.

I am sorry for your loss but he must have been proud. He (and your mother) did great work. Your interactive street portrait approach (vs. shooting people from behind and sneaking and shooting superficial "street" pictures) has totally revolutionized how I take pictures. This last weekend I made some amazing images and friendships with my subject using your technique. You are a beautiful human being and an amazing photographer. Your father left a deep and very rich legacy in an amazing human being. Well done Dad!

Great images, Paul. My dad passed away unexpectedly in '92. I still remember everything about the morning I got the call. As others have said, I think you're definitely a living legacy. I totally relate to the therapy part as well. After 22 years, I left my job to start a new one. I wish I could say it was a good decision. This job is more stress than I've ever dealt with and it's the only job that's made me physically ill just thinking of the next workday. I live for the weekends just because I know I can take my camera out. It's the only time I never think about work and it's probably saved me more than I know.

Photography is my lifelong passion it's my day job in newspapers, my hobby, my go too when I'm down and my go to when I'm up, nothing else excites me like having a camera in hand, obviously if Amanda Holden gives me a bell that would probably excite me a tad too, but only if I could take pictures of the date etc. . Terribly sorry to hear about your father, Paul. Wishing you strength and warmth. I very much appreciate your reminder to take your time - I tend to rush so many good moments in life, only afterwards realizing that it's my own anxiety that the other person couldn't possibly be alright with me doing whatever it is I was doing ... it's fine to be mindful of others' time, but too much of that voice and it's really more about self-doubt and such, in my case anyway. Your images are lovely as always. That first series of the woman with the beret and her companion with the fedora was incredible. I particularly enjoyed where the two of them are diagonally posed. Such rich light! Likewise for those straight-on portraits from your workshops. These are the sort of pictures that mystify me - it's the same earth with the same sun and so on, yet here you are able to capture these wonderfully portraits! I can't reliably get anything like that degree of depth and richness - mine are fine and all but they often have a bit of a flat quality. But you've inspired me to try to figure out how to trick light into working more in my favor. Wish I were in Scotland and able to join one of your workshops. I spent a few months there many years ago and if I ever make it back perhaps I'll have the pleasure. Until that time, looking forward to your next video.

Gorgeous rich blacks in those pics! I wonder how different photos might turn out if you used the same film and process but took the photos in a bright sunny place (like the desert southwest of the US). I always got great photos when I lived in Boston, MA, but haven’t done enough black and white in New Mexico to see if I can tackle the sharp contrast of the sun and shadows. Color film comes out nicely, but black and white will always be my favorite. And I have recently amassed a big collection of vintage cameras that I need to test out, so need to get back outside and get to it!

Condolences You mentioned shooting with film and developing with Rodinal [not sure but if that is what you mentioned]. We used Rodinal developer and Ilford Pan F in '60s. Dilute 1 : 50 and rotate once every 30 seconds. [ all from memory ]. The results was fantastic, got amazzing large enlargements. Keep up the loevly work.
