What brand of play sand is that
@arthurgiannakis21566 ай бұрын
I agree. Using play sand isn't a 'terrible idea'. I've used play sand, black diamond sand, sand from the beach, river sand and pool sand. They have all been great. I especially like river sand. I now have a very successful 8 gallon bowl with play sand substrate and it's fully planted. Has been thriving for years now. I just remember having to wash the sand and drain the water about 10 times before I used it so as to run off all the really fine dust and particles. After that it was all good to use in my aquariums. This video just seems like a bit of a kickback - 'dont use sand, buy Fluval Stratum!' for 10x the price and you get half the volume...

I Disagree With This Guy 100%...And I'm Speaking From The Perspective Of Experience. I Once Used Children's Sand-Box Sand As A Substrate In A 55 Gallon Planted Aquarium For Several Years...And It Worked Great...And It Looked Great Too. My Aquarium Vegetation Grew Well And Was Lush...If Anything, I Had To Occasionally Trim It. In An Established Tank, Plants Derive Nitrogen, Phosphorus, Potassium, And Micro-Nutrients From Fish Waste...Proper Lighting Is Also Instrumental To The Health Of Plants. This Fella Seems To Get Taken In By The Marketing That Comes From Substrate Manufacturers. I Will Also Add One More Thing...I Believe A Black Substrate Makes Any Aquarium Look Awful...And Very Unnatural.

I think the sand color ultimately depends on the fish; there are naturally occurring black sand beaches after all

I love Stratum for planted tanks. I do have play sand in my 75g turtle tank, and I like the beachy color. She destroys plants though and she loves to bury herself in the sand. It was either recommended by the turtle group or axolotl group since it's really fine grit if swallowed.

Great video. I have one two tanks with "play sand", but it has little pebbles in it, it sucks for growing plants. It has actually killed my Vallisneria i grabbed from another tank to replant. One of the tanks is pea gravel capped with play sand, the other is dirt capped with play sand. I have two tanks with just pool filter sand, they grow plants decently well. My best tank is dirted capped with pool filter sand, plants grow like crazy with low light and no added ferts. Im going to re do one of my play sand tanks with the blasting sand and dirt to see how it goes. :)

Chris, TSC has Black Diamond Blasting Abrasives , on bag it says it should not get wet…is this the same product you are discussing here? It lacks the word “sand” and says coal on the bag. It does match in price and wow, what a savings, if this is the right one? I’d appreciate a nod if this is correct per your video. Thanks in advance for the advice!!

Pool sand is finer than play sand. Requires higher pressure hence a large pool pump. Water can turn in hours or minutes.
@rafaelgonzalez417510 ай бұрын
My personal opinion is to add gravel to fine sand. Mixing the gravel in prevents sand compacting into itself. 3yrs of this type of mix now and just bi-annual water changes. Earth=1inch botom of the tank. mix 1/2 amount of gravel to full amount of sand. Two bags of sand 1 bag of gravel. fill tank 3inches.
@rafaelgonzalez417510 ай бұрын
color of sand and gravel are optional.
@rafaelgonzalez417510 ай бұрын
The importance to this is gathering the beneficial bacteria without smothering the bacteria with lack of oxygen. Which will happen after time. Sand compacts and prevents oxygen from reaching the bottom. Gravel also adds to gathering of beneficial bacteria.

Sweet thanks for the tip about the blasting sand. Aquarium sand is 20 pounds for 25 dollars. Way overpriced. The only thing is what is the best way to rinse the blasting sand? I have used play sand in my tanks before. It takes awhile to clean, but looks awesome. I was not using plants so it worked for me, and my African Cichlids loved it.
@rafaelgonzalez417510 ай бұрын
Cleaning play sand is a myth if you live in America. OSHA requires clean play sand if children are involved. Hence play sand. Made for children. Saftey standards in America are about people not animals.
@shellysmith1037 Жыл бұрын
Sorry but you are bassackwards on pool sand. Pool sand is not larger its smaller. It's super fine, that's why we use it in pool filters. You can look up the size on the web. Play sand is larger, does not compact as much, is much cheaper and is rinsed.

@muddyriverdogz Жыл бұрын
All sand contains silica ! Silica is one of the most common minerals in the earth's crust. Glass, beach sand, silicone, and granite are all silica materials. If its not being blown around and getting lodged in your lungs irs fine.

@stevegee80102 жыл бұрын
You've got that backwards. Pool filter sand is finer than play sand. Play sand is typically 1-2mm, pool sand is typically 0.5-1mm.
@muddyriverdogz Жыл бұрын
Play sand is usually not manufactured witch means it comes from nature and is more rounded and doesn't have sharp edges. Pool filter sand is manufactured. Play sand is better. Carib sea is play sand.
@rafaelgonzalez417510 ай бұрын
@@muddyriverdogz Play sand sold in America still has to go through safety standards before packaging and sale to the public. May not be maufactured as you say, it is simply sholveled into a bag. But still has to be inspected, tested and approved by OSHA. Selling products to the public has concerns and safety. OSHA has regulations.
