I've been using Reolink cameras around my house for about 2 years now and not having them visible in Homekit always drove me crazy. I am beyond happy I stumbled upon this video! Shane, you can setup the those Reolinks with the Onvif plugin instead of RTSP plugin in scrypted so you can use the native motion alerts from the camera and not waste compute resources on the Synology to detect motion. You can also drop the main stream resolution from 4k to have it stream flawlessly in high resolution in the home app.
@ShaneCreates

Thanks for the tip Shamir. I'll check out that plugin.

@wehbs

@@seanismboi Yes. I have 3 of the RLC-820A cameras updated to the latest fw from the Reolink site. I also have the main stream resolution set to 2560x1440 @ 8549 Kb/s. You have to do this because the 4k stream is in H265 and the streams needs to be in H264 which the one I mentioned is. In Scrypted I use the Onvif plugin and the only important setting I adjusted was http override which I set to 8000. Works flawlessly. Perform better than my native HK cams.

I'm using UniFi Protect cameras for outdoors and I was leaning towards going with Scripted to get them into Apple Home. This video has confirmed that this is the way I should go. Now I just need to decide if I want to get a Raspberry Pi to run it on or wait until I get my rack mounted Synology NAS and run it there in a Docker container. Decisions, decisions, decisions. For the new house I will be using Unifi cameras and think I will stick with HomeBridge with the Unifi plugin it might not be faster than Scrypted but the HomeBridge is super stable and has HKSV as well. Great to see you testing out POE cameras; if I can hardwire a devices that is the way to go for me and should be the norm for future companies to follow.

@ShaneCreates
@ShaneCreates 2 жыл бұрын
You should be able to use Synology Surveillance Station on the Synology (with PoE switch) instead of recording onto the NVR if you want. I'm using my Synology primarily as a Plex Media Server, backup storage for my video content, as well as to run homebridge and scrypted. So I chose to keep the camera recording separate by using the Reolink NVR (and also using it for poe).

Hi Shane. How did you get your cameras to have an ip address in the same network as your home devices? Nvr typically gives the cams an ip address that is local to the nvr and not your home network. So you can’t access the cams directly in order to generate an rtsp address because they hide behind the nvr. Did you use a separate switch? Or configure the ports in the nvr?
@paulrogers945
@paulrogers945 Жыл бұрын
I'm curious about that too. I got mine running last night with 2 Reolink cameras (no NVR) with memory cards in the camera. But I'd like to add an NVR.
@eddynaime5798
@eddynaime5798 Жыл бұрын
@@paulrogers945 yeah. The nvr gives the cameras an ip totally different from the home network. In essence creating a whole separate network that is behind the nvr so it’s not seen easily. I’ve heard all nvr’s behave this way unless you do something different. Not sure what that is so hopefully we can get some responses. I’ve scoured the diy videos and they all show cams directly connected to the home router.

I’m looking to get a new setup with cameras both inside and outside. Currently using Arlo4k but they have to be attached to solar and dont record consistently. Would you still recommend this POE setup? Would you still go POE?

anyone having this problem…my nvr of course is using an ip address within my network, however the nvr hands out different ip addresses to the ip cameras. i don’t see a way on the nvr to configure this. i get unreachable for all my cameras. i cannot ping the camera ip addresses, but can ping the nvr. which ip address should go in the video stream part of the scrypted/homebridge config?

I just got a set of ReoLink POE cameras and NVR system.. I’m confused by the “docker container Synology nass” and HomeBridge/Scrypted. Do I need to purchase the Synology unit to be able to run HomeBridge or Scrypted? And is HomeBridge/Scrypted another physical unit that gets plugged in somewhere?? Any and all info will be greatly appreciated

Homebridge and Scrypted are software. They do require a computer of some sort to run on. I have a Synology NAS, in which I can install software packages like HomeBrodge or Scrypted. Many people run homebridge on something like a raspberry pi or even old Mac computers. Synology is great and has many uses, but I wouldn’t recommend one just for homebridge or scrypted as they are expensive. There is more information and useful links in the video description that should help. And here is an older video that covers the basics of homebridge a little bit and my setup on the Synology: kzbin.info/www/bejne/npe7pH-goKl8e6ssi=VqujJKxtrgloe2v4

Do you have all the cameras plugged directly into the NVR or a POE swipch with the NVR on the same network? Been reading around and from what I’ve seen the cameras lose a lot of smart functionalities when plugged directly into a NVR.

There is also issues like, i can only connect 1 camera and not all 4 that i own. Super frustrating and this is coming from a web developer lol... any help is appreciated...

Thanks for the suggestion. If you can connect one camera, you can connect the others. You just need to change the channel number for each camera you add in Scrypted (same IP address since using the NVR's IP address)

Thanks Bruno! Usually at the end of the rtsp url for the NVR systems you'll see something like "...Preview_01_sub" or "....Preview_01_main" The "01" is the actual camera. So change it to "02" for the second camera, etc. and the rest of the rtsp url should stay the same.

It's hard to compare native HomeKit to something that uses Hombridge or Scrypted. That said, the Reolink cameras have performed very well using these methods. Just depends on your needs. As mentioned, I'm a fan of wired if possible.

@ShaneCreates
@ShaneCreates 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks Gregg! Homebridge does work well. Overall, I’d have been happy enough with the Homebridge solution. I just felt that scrypted gave me slightly better performance when compared side by side. Homebridge does give you more features which could be nice for some. I'd have no problem using the Homebridge solution either. You only need one Ethernet port to plug in your NVR camera system in for internet access (the cameras all plug directly into the NVR). So if you have one port available on your router, no need for a switch. But if not, you’ll need a the switch. Hope that makes helps.

Shane, excellent video to get someone started. I used HomeBridge previously, but have switched to Scrypted because the response time is so much faster in the home app. That being said, I'm using Amcrest, so there are some differences. Does Apple TV load the live streams for you this way? In my setup I have two Apple TV HDs that both get snapshots but cannot stream the live video. This includes a hardwired Apple TV not using WiFi.

Question for ya Shane. I love the channel, and have slowly been building out my setup (have joined a few of your live streams as well). My question is, I have UniFi everywhere in my house, for wifi, plus a slough of Protect cams. They work flawlessly in the native Protect app, and after much testing, I have found Scrypted to work MUCH better for UniFi cams vs. Homebridge/Hoobs. So, I have Homebridge for my main platform, but use Scrypted for UniFi. In either of these cases (Homebridge/Hoobs/Scrypted), I have yet to see a way to expose the "smart" motion detection of these cams.. I DO see where you can use the generic motion detection; however, that's lame :). What we REALLY need to figure out is, how can I expose the smart detections to trigger automations.. Such as, if my UniFi Cam pointed at the driveway detects a PERSON or VEHICLE within its motion zone, trigger an automation to turn on ALL exterior lights (vs. relying on standard motion security lights, or even the generic motion detector that IS exposed to HomeKit) as those create so many false positives (wind blowing, shadows, random cat, etc..) This would make SO much sense.. Any ideas on how to accomplish this??
@ShaneCreates
@ShaneCreates 2 жыл бұрын
Hey, thanks for watching and supporting the channel. I agree, would love this. It's still something that's not even possible with native homekit. For example, HomeKit Secure Video cameras can detect packages, animals, people, etc, but I can NOT use that detection as an automation trigger. I have seen it done before using the Nest Homebridge plugin. For example, using facial detection to trigger automations. So it's really going to be up to the plugin developer for anything going through Homebridge or Scrypted. I'd recommend reaching out and leaving your suggestions. Maybe it's something they can build into a future release.

@@ShaneCreates Thanks for the reply homey! Yea, that would solve SO many issues for me personally, and I'd imagine countless others, by reducing all the stupid false positives and getting very useful with automations based on people, etc.. Thanks for the tips, always look forward to the content!
