I'm in the same boat man. I'm a Maschine MK3 and Komplete Kontrol user and I love keeping my hands on the hardware instead of watching the screen. The Studio One DAW looks so dope but their controllers just don't come close to the Maschine. The Faderport 16 looks great for mixing, but the ATOM and ATOM SQ just don't do it for me. In an ideal world, Native Instruments would just develop their software into a full DAW but i wouldn't hold my breath.

Just a comment inside this interesting tuto about ATOM which i purchased some days ago. As i try to follow the steps, i found that some actions had to be explained to avoid surprise. In the part related to the tempo, if we do not close the chorder window, which is showed but not explained, the knob number 2 does not change the tempo but changes something inside the chorder window.

do the knobs work with third party plugins? like uad moog?
@sweetwater8 ай бұрын
Hi SarahKayaComson, great question! The ATOM Pad is sending out MIDI information from its knobs and pads. Unfortunately, these seem to be hard coded and cannot be assigned to send different MIDI messages. The UAD Moog is also hard coded and doesn’t seem to allow MIDI Learn (at least from their current manual) so these two would not work well together. I would look at the MPD218, as it is a fully configurable MIDI controller. It allows you, with the help of the editor, to have the knobs or pads control any message you wish them to! Thank you for this excellent demonstration. Seamless with Presonus related products. Just curious on the integration with Reason Studios 11 and Native Instruments drum samples, triggers, MIDI mapping and whether there is any automated integration.
@sweetwater3 жыл бұрын
Hi, thanks for the interest! The Atom Pad integrates "out of the box" with Studio One and Ableton Live. If you are using Reason Studios and/or Native Instruments software as plug-ins inside one of these supported DAWs, you should be able to use the Atom to control parameters of those plug-ins without doing too much mapping. However, if you are using Reason as your main DAW, you will have to set up the Atom as a generic MIDI controller and assign it in the software to do what you want it to do. Hope this helps, and feel free to contact me directly with further questions! Caleb Lowrey, Sweetwater Sales Engineer, (800) 222-4700 ext. 1620, caleb_lowrey@sweetwater.com

@@sweetwater Thanks for the insight and prompt reply. I've done the mapping with an Arturia keyboard via the MIDI Controller to Reason 11 and it was a pain in the arse. NI has quite a few plugins with VSTs in Kontakt as an example and also Massive all part of Komplete Suite. If you're in need of another tutorial, these might bring you new fans. I do hope Presonus is able to create scripts or macros perhaps that "on the fly" integrate with NI and Reason. On the Arturia keyboard I can choose: "Analog Lab", "DAW" (and choose Studio One or other DAWs) or User (manual approach) thus mapping / scripting is possible.

Hello, Joey! The ATOM Pad in and of itself is a USB MIDI controller. Any one of the pads on the unit itself can be assigned to virtually any function that supports an incoming MIDI signal within your audio software of choice. Also, it does have transport controls with a start and stop feature. If using within Studio One, the ATOM Pad will be automatically mapped to such functions within Studio One, but it certainly can be programmed to work with any other software. Thanks for the interest! Vs Machine I do not know but they are fine vs an MPC for example. I own an MPC Studio Black and an ATOM. Both cool albeit different. ATOM lights pretty bright in the evening. Knobs feeling different for sure. ImpactXT has some limitations vs MPC Software program edit features. I am using both, with MPC software being a VST in Studio One 4.5 Artist w/ VST add on. Thinking about upgrading to Pro for NoteFx and Melodyne.
@theoriginalheartstrummer4 жыл бұрын
The ATOM is not as fully featured as the Machine, nor are the pads as good. However, compared overall to Maschine it is much better as it integrates (using Studio One Pro) MUCH easier into a DAW than machine ever did for me. So with the combined flexibility of the DAW ATOM wins over Maschine. It is not as powerful as Ableton Push 2 either, but if they update a couple of things on it then it really could be. To me, having used Machine for a year and push 2 and ableton, ATOM and studio one is the simplest and most integrated into a full production of everything. I would personally like to see them copy some functionality of those controllers in their next firmware update, such as scale mapping and semitone transpose, and then it would be the best of all.

Hello, Start To Finish Podcasting! The ATOM Pad is designed for use with Studio One and Ableton. You can certainly set it up to trigger sounds within those two applications, but it is not a standalone sample player. If you are recording your podcasts within one of those two pieces of software, it will be perfect. That said, if you are doing live broadcasts, something like the Rodecaster Pro would be a better solution as it allows you to playback sample directly from it. Thanks for the interest! What does knob 3 and 4 do?
@sweetwater8 ай бұрын
Hi, thanks for the question! The knobs default to MIDI CC 14-17 and 18-21 when shift is held. How these correspond to StudioOne depends entirely on what plugin, instrument or window you are currently using. For example, knobs 3 and 4 control the zoom and scroll of the ‘Sample One’ instrument. Since they are sending MIDI information, you can also use MIDI learn to map them to pretty much whatever parameter you would like on any instrument or DAW that allows MIDI learn! The more I look into this equipment , the more I am glad I actually learned to play an instrument. This video inspires me to work even harder to be a real player and not depend on this type of stuff. This is not achievement. This is not growth. The sense of accomplishment does not come from a device doing things for you. I urge you not to cheat yourself out of true development. The culture will change again and this stuff will go out as fast as it came in, because there is no substance to give it life. Learn to play. Pay the price. Respect your real gift. ignore this hollow pretense.

Wow man, I learned to play the guitar, but I like the idea of learning and trying new creative techniques. There's no shortcuts to learning an instrument or technology to control them. Was Rush taking shortcuts or any less musical when using new pieces to play with? It's all in the pursuit of music that satisfies us. My favorite band since '92 has been Mr Bungle, but that doesn't mean I didn't grow up on Steve Miller and Fleetwood mac and Hall and Oates, and then Def Leppard and Thompson Twins, then later Alice in Chains and Beastie Boys, Nirvana and Kyuss and the Melvins, the Roots, Pharcyde, or the Invisible scratch piklz on turntables. It's all groovy. Keep playing and keep an open mind.
