Watching this video reminded me that you are one of the best "Shooters" out there. Have to learn more. Really enjoyed the video and appreciated the fact that you appreciated your own "shots" when you made a good one. Kinda feel like I deserve a shot at a fish whenever I make "the perfect cast" too. Be well.

Hey Mike. Great video. I have shot docks for years and it's a great way to catch crappie. I have friends that carry a 12 ft. rod with them so when the crappie get finicky, they will vertical jig under the dock floats with the long rod. Absolutely deadly technique after you catch 2-4 fish out from under the dock. I have also noticed that the bigger fish that are caught are on the longer rod with the slower presentation. Hope this helps. Thanks again for the videos.

Just subscribed. Really enjoyed you showing the side imaging on sonar under docks and sharing why you chose the docks you chose to fish.Great information. The "how to" is much appreciated. Could you tell me what brand, model, and length of your favorite dock shooting rod(s) and reel (s)? I have a 6 foot B&M sharpshooter rod, but would like a 6.6 foot or maybe a 5.5 foot rod and reel to along with the one I have. I will be using exclusively for dock shooting for crappie. Thanks.
@DrZiggyzoo1
@DrZiggyzoo1 6 жыл бұрын
When shooting docks I like to use a shorter rod in the 5' to 5.5' range. 6' is definitely my max for shooting docks. It's much more manageable when you're up close to the dock. With a long 7' rod, the rod tip likes to dance left or right when you pull it back. I alternate between a light or ultralight action. I like shooting with the light action more since it's a bit more rigid and the tip doesn't move left or right as easily when pulling back. You can use an ultralight if the bites are really light. For me, line watching is the best way to catch the light biters. If it's windy I use the ultralight since the line likes to dance in the wind. I'm not super specific on my rod brand with crappie rods. I have Crappie Maxx rods and Bass Pro Micro Lite rods. I've been wanting to get an Ozark Rod Dock shooter or an ACC Crappie Stix. I'm leaning more toward the ACC because it's a 5' 5" instead of 6ft. However, I'm picky with bass rods! As far as reels, I like using a Shimano Sahara 1000. I own three of them and have loved them. Some people prefer using underspins when shooting docks because you don't have to flip the bail all the time. To me it's no big deal. Another important thing for me, is using HiVis line. I used to use clear, but now I always use HiVis with crappie. I normally get 4lb Crappie Maxx Super Vis line from Bass Pro. It's like $8 for 3,000 yds which is plenty!
@MikeBakerVideos
@MikeBakerVideos 6 жыл бұрын
B & M have some nice dock shooting rods. I use a 6' rod for heavier baits but I have some older 5'5" Allstar rods I use for smaller baits that I love. I can control the shorter rods better, especially in tight situations. With that said, I know fishermen who are deadly with longer rods. It comes down to experimentation and time on the water to find out what you are comfortable with and what works best for you.

Looking for advice. In my area I have 3 municipal reservoirs to fish. We don't have the docks and such to shoot like in this video. The lakes are mostly flat bottomed with the only structure being the natural contour of the land, ie creek channels, rip rap around bridges, bridge pillars, and natural points. For the most part the water is anywhere from 6-30 deep. What would you say would be the most productive method for fishing for crappie in these types of lakes and what baits would you think would be best? Thanks for the help and I love your channel.
@MikeBakerVideos
@MikeBakerVideos 5 жыл бұрын
Many methods could work, depending on the time of the year, water temp, etc. Long line trolling of jigs or crankbaits with higher water temps. Slow trolling (spider rigging) can be good year round. An old fashion jig and bobber or minnow and bobber are hard to beat. If you find the bait fish you will find the crappie. Study the natural structure like drop offs, even if slight, and edges of any natural creek channels. Good luck and thanks for watching.

I went out to local lake today to try to use side imaging to look under docks just as you did on this video. I actually have the same unit you used. I cannot figure why I can't see under docks as you do. I had it set for 50' on right only. Only difference was the docks I went by were in only 7 to 14 feet of water - more shallow than docks you were examining. When I go by bridge pilings, I see the pilings and whatever is around them, but nothing under the docks. I know some of the docks that I was looking at has wood connected to the dock underneath - in water, but I don't see anything, but as already stated, I can see the bridge pilings very clearly. Could it be the type of dock? Does this make sense - any suggestion(s)?. I went back and looked at the side imaging pictures from your video again before sending this long comment/question Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Great video Mike. I’ve been wanting to try this since I watched your first dock shooting video. My wife and I finally got out and tried this wkend. It’s much harder than you make it look. We ended up with twelve keepers and had a blast doing it. One question, how long does this pattern usually last? Thanks for the info.

Keep practicing, it gets easier. Pattern should last all winter into late spring. During the spawn the fish will move up behind the docks. Shoot under the dock cables, reel in and hold on.
