I don't like the very alkaline pH of natural saponification, there are much better, more skin compatible materials available. Sorry you might not like the answer but that is my answer.

thank you for the educational video. I was wondering if you have tried adding behenyl alcohol and make a balm emulsion with sucragel q. I tried sapougel Q with oils/butters and behenyl alcodol and it didn't work. I can't find info if the alcohols and the sapougels or similar type of gels are actually not competitive with fatty alcohols. thank you

You can make an emulsion with sucragel, please search for my videos on sucragel for an example, but you can't make an oily gel using sucragel and fatty alcohols. Hi J Cote do you mean more like a balm? You would need some waxy materials to get more of a balm - however in this video, the oily gel I create will not run, so while its not a balm, it suits a jar. Not sure if that is what you are trying to create but for balms you do need waxy or more solid materials.

I have been working with this for about a year and each time I used my stick blender instead of my overhead mixer, it 'breaks' and no matter how much I stir with my overhead, it never comes back together again. You mentioned that you can use a stick blender; can you give some tips?

Hi Julie, similar tips to this video - at in very small amounts at the start and DON'T add any more until you see it is very glossy. I have used a stick blender and it still works well but adding in small amounts and not adding more until it turns glossy is essential. I hope this helps. If it does separate, pour off the separated oil layer and start again - seriously, it still works!

You can use a stick blender but it is harder to get it just right - just remember to pour off any separated components and try again until you get the technique right. Watch our video on how to fix sucragel.

Not when prepared like this for oily gels, no - but if you use it as an emulsifier in creams/lotions (I have a video like that coming out soon) then yes a preservative is needed. There is not enough water present in the oily gel to be an issue, but in other product forms you do need a preservative. Happy formulating!
