I did my Apollo 11 command module today and it looks beautiful! I didn't quite get the smoothness you got though. See, I am using a pancake compressor in my garage and the max is 150 psi. When I turn it down to around 25 psi, there is no flow. between 25- 40 I'm getting flow but when I sprayed flat aluminum, it went on with a rough texture. In the past I had a Paasche compressor and I airbrushed with no issues. My airbrush is the Paasche Talon.

i use SMS jet black with good results.. Tamiya spray will work out so expensive in uk
@seanusmcmaximus5 ай бұрын
Hey there buddy, i just wanted to say a huge thank you. I do a huge amount on chroming. I find alclad black was pretty good, and here the UK they have stopped selling it, import only. Ammo mig brought out the astand range, which, isnt terrible, but ive found the black base to not be as good as alclad and either way alclad or a stand, i genuinely hate spraying it on larger things. It works fine on small detail curvy pieces but ive found they just arent that good on something the size of the back of a spoon. I find i get alot of ripples are the gloss just isnt that great, which means the chrome isnt that great. I hate spraying the enamels, especially on larger things as 1, the astand black is expensive and 2, the fumes are horrible. Smaller stuff not too bad, but i was struggling. I watched your video here and i thought id give the tamiya ts-14 a try. The x-1 is ok, but the gloss isnt as good as alclad/astand in my opinion. Ive just tried the ts-14 and its amazing. I can see it saving me alot of time and money in the future. I also put it straight to plastic, and the smoothness of the plastic works well with the gloss. Is there any need for primer? ive yet to put chrome, candy and clear on it, so i look forward to seeing what the final results are.So i just wanted to say thank you for being a pioneer on these kind of things its really helped me out! Keep it up the good work!

Thanks for the review I like Alclad Chrome but the base gloss black also doesn't give me the best results so, like you, I wonder if something changed about the formula and how you're supposed to spray it. First bottle I followed the instructions to spray multiple coats until it looks wet/glossy after it dries. This current bottle is glossy but not as much as the previous one and it just doesn't seem to spray as smoothly as the previous bottle either. I do have Mr Color gloss black lacquer which works great but gonna give Tamiya gloss black a try now. As always thanks for your videos.

Mental gears turning here... I'm thinking that metallic paints, especially chrome, are highly pigmented paints. As such, once you've sprayed enough on the subject that you get a nice reflective chrome look, isn't the color of your base coat moot at that point? The layer of pigments have become opaque. So, this begs the question: Is a more comprehensive test warranted? Should other gloss colors be tested under metallics? Is a specific color even needed, or is the real "mojo" in smoothness of the surface on which the metallic paint is being sprayed? I tried a small test of my own, and actually had the best results by spraying clear acrylic gloss (Future) over a sheet of plain white styrene. However, I've heard (not tried yet) that gloss royal blue is better than gloss black. I'm curious about your thoughts and whether you'd be open to doing a comprehensive test in your studio?

I had to stop using tamiya paints. Idk what happened but quality control went down real bad. I've gotten 3 spray cans with either clogged or broken nozzles, and the jars of paint I've gotten recently were completely dried out. I contacted them they sent me replacements but the replacements were also crap. Seals on them cracked or something and only 1 jar still had paint in it when it arrived, i would say it was a shipping issue but they weren't shattered just leaked out of the lid somehow. And one of the spray cans was completely empty, like just air and a marble. Legit after 4 tickets with support and them not believing me I'm done with tamiya. I'm still waiting on my refund for the box of destroyed product they sent me as compensation for the destroyed products they sent me and its been over a month now fighting them over this.

@@barbatosrex9473 I was shocked as well. I've never in 6 years had an issue out of any of their products. And I would've just chocked it up to "well maybe I got unlucky and got some back of the warehouse stuff that sat a while." Or "maybe it was just a bad batch" but the customer service really was the straw that broke the camels back. They asked for a picture to prove it was messed up, even asked me to send back the damaged product so it could be inspected, I guess my pictures weren't good enough. Really great company 99.9% of the time but that 0.1% is so painful because of how awful customer support is handled. So if you ever have to contact tamiya customer support, I would just not do that and count it as a loss.
