Using Techline Connect and a VCX Nano to fix Chevy Volt Service High Voltage Charging System Error

I have had a 2012 for about 6 years, and I get this error about once a year. Had 2 of the 3 batteries replaced under warranty and now a cell in the 3rd battery is going bad (out of warranty now), if I keep in Mountain mode it works fine. Forgot to put into mountain mode and it faulted. The only local mech that I believed could reset it (Even had a Chevy dealer once that couldn't reset it) said it would be 2 to 3 weeks before he could get to it and $250. I scoured the internet and found this video. Rolled the dice and bought VX Diag and subscription. It took multiple attempts to get everything working, but finally got it. Last year with my VX nano I was able to reprogram my vote. This year I cannot get connected to Techline Connect with the VX nano. Any help on procedure would be great. I get an unauthorized user message on Techline Connect website. I never get to the loading green checks.

Thank you for the video. I have a 2014 Cadillac ELR and was having this issue almost every time I drove the car over the last 3 months. I was lucky in that the cheap scanner I had and keep in the car could actually clear these advanced EV codes, surprisingly. The car would charge full without issue but would usually set P1FFF, P0AA6, and P1E00 as soon as I disconnected the charger or shut it down to run into a store, when I started the system back up. It got to be habit where I'd get in the car, plug the scan tool in, clear the code, then put it in drive and go. I came across your video when searching those three codes, likely because of the High Voltage Isolation Fault (P0AA6) and instead of going to the dealer with the Bulletin PIC5920J in hand, I figured I didn't have much to lose for less than $200 total, including the SPS2 subscription. I'm out of warranty now on the EV system, so I wasn't looking forward to taking it to the dealer and having them possibly throw parts at the problem to fix it. My 2014 is my newest vehicle with the next newest being a 2007 and still able to use my Tech2. Unfortunately it looks like my Tech2 is now obsolete on any vehicle I buy in the future after upgrading my older vehicles. I'm looking forward to trying out the Tech2Win function at some point to see if I can replace my Tech2 with the VCX as one tool. It's only been today, one battery discharge cycle but I'm hopeful since I didn't have to reset the faults after shutting the car down several times as I ran the battery down to 0 range and engaged the ICE for testing. I updated the ECU for the engine management as well. Tonight is the first time in months that I didn't have to reset the codes after restarting from a shutdown. I was a little worried as my new VCX Nano showed expired license even though it claims to have updated it. It showed 3 times availability in SPS2 so I checked all systems that were important, like the ECBM, Engine, and Transmission software. Only the HPCM2, ECBM, and ECU needed updates. The BCM showed some updates available but I need to understand what those are before I try to update them, they simply are labeled "Software Update" with no explanation. Only one note that I didn't see covered in the video. The update to the HPCM2 took quite a long time after the programming was done. SPS2 wouldn't let me disconnect or shutdown for about 30 minutes after programming was complete. I realized it was still working in the background as I saw my range going counting down to 0 and back to 37 several times before the car finally released the Nano and SPS allowed a shutdown. Again, thanks for the video, you may have saved me a lot of frustration, aggravation, and dollars at the dealership.

Thanks for making these videos on the volt. Such a frustrating problem with the switch. Nice to have a reference of what's supposed to happen. My volt is a 12 not sure what year this is. Wonder if you can revert to the original battery range software before the fix..

Both of our volts are 2012s. I think the Russian guy can hack it backwards. But the more I get used to it I think I’m going to keep it this way. (Unless I switch to the 2016 ELR software.) Thanks for watching! Just trying to give back!

Just a note to those who have been trying to avoid doing this (reprogram the HPCM2 and BCM) to fix the SHVCS issue by just clearing the faults every time you need to charge like I did -> it will come and bite you in the butt when you have to take your Volt in for the emission test. I took mine in today and my Volt failed the emission test because many of the emission data cannot be read by the smog computer, because the data get cleared everyday by me when I clear out the fault codes so I can recharge. So now I MUST do this HPCM2 and BCM reprogram first, then drive my Volt past the GM drive cycle (whatever that means, drive 500 miles? I don't know), so I can collect enough emission data before I can pass the emission test. Good thing I have 1 month left to do all this.

I had a Tacoma that i would disconnect the battery which then (upon reconnection) would fail the emissions. I drove it around for about 30 miles, cycling the engine on/off 3-4 times in the process. It passed after that. Not sure how you'd do that with the Volt, however. Maybe run Mountain Mode or Hold? Maybe pop the hood and just let it idle? All of the above, just to get the engine to run for ~30 minutes (with 3-4 cycles)?

This is as close to a step by step guide as I can make. You will need the AC Delco subscription to rewrite your HPCM2 module. (Which is the only official way to clear this error.) I also have a video on how to use the VCX Nano and the GDS2 clone software it comes with to clear the error. But it only works sometimes.

Are you launching TLC from the acdelco website? Make sure it’s logged in and you’re launching it from the VIN for your car.

Very odd. I only open TLC through the ACDelco website launcher. I’ve never had it ask for updates to T2W or any other program. Good luck!

You ever get the error e4399 error receiving controller data? It connects to vehicle fine and pulls up vin but Every time I select the module to program it’ll take my vin slot then give me that error. Not sure if I set up vcx wrong or what. At 3:36 you select the VXDIAG. I don’t see that screen, but I do have the option to select diagnostic tool in SPS. The VXDIAG is not an option. How did you get it there?

Oh man. Sorry just saw this. Short answer is I don’t know. I recall having that issue once. It may have come down to order of connecting and launching SPS? I think I had the VCX connected THEN launched it? I may have had to remove some unnecessary software too. Sorry I can’t recall. It’s … touchy.

Can you tell which OBD2 gadget you use? Mine will reset code, but it comes right back the next time I start the car! Also, what year is your Volt? The 2011-2012 seem to have problems with code clearing.

Hey bro. I had to reprogram my modules last year. Now I am trying to do it again and I get an error when I try to begin the reprogramming sequence. E4399. "There was an error retrieving the controller data". Nothing has changed, same VX nano and laptop. The only thing that might have changed perhaps is the USB wire. Maybe all mine are old? I don't know. have you ever experienced this?

I saw your comments on the other video too. Sorry I’m just responding. It sounds like you need the new software on the HPCM2 module and BECM module. You’ll need a VCX Nano or MDI Clone to do that. (It’s the device that plugs into both the car and the laptop and provides that interface.) The ACdelco Techline Connect subscription is $40 for 2 years per VIN. You may also need a new 12v battery. Perhaps take that to autozone or similar and have them test it a few times. I was having recurrent SHVCS errors and it turns out all I needed was a new 12v battery.

Yes, it is a two factor authentication, meaning it sends a code to your e-mail that has to be entered for access, like your bank.

@@edmiller6227 no sir. The cost is in the subscriptions. I use SPS2 and a 2 year subscription per VIN is $40. A really good deal IMO. This is probably a $200-300 service at a dealer. The VCX Nano is $140 so if I use it only once I’m out ahead. I want a subscription to the legit GM GDS2, but that’s like $500 for 2 years.

@@utjay2008 I bought the nano and tried to clear the Service High Voltage Charging System Error but it did not work. Once I clear it did show right back up. I believe the next step is to buy the $40 subscription. I did replace the temp senor at the base on the tank for $20. Any suggestions?
