Fascinating that your 2200G died like that, I wonder how changing the VRAM size broke it. Assuming reverting the BIOS setting did not fix it, maybe the rumours I picked up of first gen Ryzen having weak memory controllers and those chips dying quickly are related. I can cite neither and am going of my memory here, only remembered when you specifically mentioned it practically being first gen Ryzen (I know the APUs are a gen behind).
@xFluing2 жыл бұрын
Thing is, it wouldn't have affected performance had he left the memory allocation to 64MB or 2GB, seeing as after "running out" of those 64MB it would spill over into using the system memory, which it uses anyway. Hardware Unboxed did a good video on this. Sure games might report lower memory but performance would have been unaffected.
@SianaGearz2 жыл бұрын
It actually happens to a lot of people that when you change a random BIOS setting, the AMD system appears dead; the remedy is to perform CMOS memory reset using the specific procedure in the mainboard manual, like if it says the ATX power supply needs to be unpowered, then it needs to be unpowered. If you deviate from the procedure at all, you might not get a clean reset, you might get residue of formerly stored values configuration values. The values you have to be afraid of are not the visible ones, but the hidden values from training. You may need to do it several times, also removing the battery and shorting the battery contacts; but this doesn't set the correct clear flag, so you need to reinstall the battery, and then use the clear pins to have it activate the clear flag, and try to boot the system shortly after. This assuming that none of the components took damage. I wager a guess, if the components such as the APU are really dead, then that's purely unrelated. That the APU was already dead but just didn't know it yet, and it's just a coincidence that it decided to do its last breath that specific time.

I completed the main questline of Oblivion back in 2007 at probably 25-35 FPS (with a 7600GS), and again a few years later on a laptop with integrated graphics at about 15-20 FPS! I've played games since the early 90s and I find that playing current games - RD2, FC New Dawn, Teardown - is fine at 40 FPS, plus I get to see all the amazing effects which have been added to games in the past 20 years and which still impress me (modern shader effects and even basic effects like dynamic shadows are still incredible to me). I think a bit of perspective is needed here. What is possible with a £200 GPU is amazing - forget the hype around the high end. I've recently got a laptop with a 65 watt RTX 3050 - slightly worse than the desktop RX 6500 XT - and it's really impressed me. I can run modern games at 1440p at medium-high settings and I think they look and feel great. Most hardware reviewers are coming from viewing the best hardware available when they come to this and are accordingly biased - at least you seem to have an appreciation for the benefits of PC hardware as a whole - that it's endlessly scalable and impressive at all levels as long as the cost of access is fair. As you've said before, there's no such thing as a bad GPU - only a badly priced GPU. The RX6500XT certainly provides enough performance for current games, it's just that it should cost £150. If you're looking for a GPU currently, the used market is the place to go - a 1060 6GB or RX580 8GB will provide plenty of power even for modern games at 1080p/1440p and still look great - it's just a shame that these second hand GPUs are often costing more than they did at launch 5+ years ago. Carry on making your great videos!

Great video, this GPUs performance is so fascinating. Ive actually heard some people say that some of the Very High/Ultra settings in Mankind Divided had some issues, like Ambient Occlusion being too strong or higher quality shadows having rendering/filtering issues. So 1080p High Settings at 60fps in the benchmark, which is more demanding than most parts in the game, is great performance. Doom Eternal having so many issues is very worrying compared to how well the Series S runs Doom Eternal. My 390 could run Doom Eternal quite well at a dynamic 1440p at around Medium settings. Would love to see how well this GPU compares to the Series S in Watch Dogs Legion and Metro Exodus Enhanced, because the latter game pushes that small console to its limits.

7:22 Could you not just reset the bios by clearing CMOS ? Also increasing the framebuffer on a intergraded graphics pc wont do anything, unless the rest of the RAM is being used by other programs, which is very unlikely for modern games if 16GB of RAM is used and for old games with 8GB of RAM. The pc will just use however much of RAM it needs for the framebuffer, no matter what you set it too in bios, which is more of a ringfencing. Edit: Seems he has answered, check pinned comment.

the odd circumstances of ultra settings getting better framerates in farcry5 is pretty common in open world games, something to do with offloading the grass and other groundclutter to the GPU and reducing drawcalls. please try vulcan vs directX on a similar setup. I would like to know why the 2200G died, seems pretty weird that increasing the memory caused it to die. Now it will make me think twice about doing that in the future lol.
@SianaGearz2 жыл бұрын
It was probably already dead for unrelated reasons, and just didn't know it yet. That it took its last breath that moment may be a coincidence. But it might also be that all the hardware is OK and the system has a training data error in the CMOS memory that prevents it from booting or recovery. It can be actually quite difficult to clear CMOS on modern systems and have it actually take hold, a lot of conditions need to be met, so the manual needs to be followed. Like CMOS will not be cleared if the battery is removed, it will only be corrupted. It will also not be cleared if there's +5VSB remaining and under other circumstances. Even when doing it correctly, several attempts may be needed. This sort of recoverable corruption seems to be somewhat frequrently reported.

I worked on performances optimization and graphics on the PC version of some big franchise and stutter usually means disk accesses or memory swap. The OS might be swapping some GPU memory to disk causing stalls or the game is trying to just load something big from disk. My hunch is that the texture resolution is too high and you are busting your VRAM memory. You can view this in the task manager > Performance > Graphic processor. Once the dedicated memory is filled and you start to see the shared memory rise up is when things start to get stuttery. It's because the whole pipeline has to come to a crawl as disk accesses are made which are extremly slow.

Great video, I do find it interesting that you say you want both CPU And GPU to be a little bottlenecked while playing to indicate a balanced system. I've always figured that it's cheaper to invest in a CPU that can handle more GPU, so your GPU bottleneck can be fixed with one part upgrade down the line, and the rest of your PC gets faster. If you're CPU bottlenecked you spent a lot on a GPU and to upgrade CPU you could need to buy a new CPU, Cooler, even motherboard and ram, compared to just the GPU and at worst the power supply when upgrade time comes. Ryzen 5s and i5s can handle 80 series cards, definitely 70 series, but people get them with 60 series so they can get a big bonus when they get a next generation 60 or 70 series GPU. On such a tight budget though, the minimum CPU for gaming now and not in 5 years is ideal, especially with Ryzen's incredible motherboard compatibility to go from a ryzen 3 to a ryzen 9
@logandeboer10092 жыл бұрын
Admittedly this school of thought is based on the PC buying experience from 2018, considering ryzen 5 1600s and 1060s, when the ryzen 5 would reach its limit at the 1080ti, and an i3 8100 was a quad core that could handle the 1070ti without bottlenecking

Hey Philip, just wondering if you are going to/have already and I'm just stupid cover Source 2s hammer editor version, or is there not much point. Wanting to get into hammer, and I own alyx, and was just wondering if it's better to use the old hammer tuts or see if there's one available for the current version.

Philip don't assign more VRAM to the 2200G, keep it on default as Windows will continue to use RAM if needed (regardless of 2GB or whatever) similar to how a page file works. By reserving the VRAM you are essentially wasting RAM.

An i3-12100, i5-12400, or 11400 make FAR more sense to pair with the 6500xt. Because they support PCIe 4.0 and have an IGP with encoder. It is not recommend to pair the 6500xt with other CPUs due to it's bad PCIe 3.0 performance and no encoders

but people who are in the market for just the gpu (and a whole lot are), this is what they are going to get. people with a 2nd gen ryzen arent going to upgrade their entire system just to get the 15% more from the gpu.

@@bodek a good cpu makes your computer faster, programs faster, everything faster. not everything relies on the GPU alone. having something like a 5600X or 12400 can make sure you never have to worry about CPU bottlenecks (for a couple generations) or having a slow computer because these 2 processors are very capable.

im saying people who are looking to buy THIS card dont have the money to buy a better cpu. they have 200 dollars to spend on a component that will improve their pc. a 6500xt will improve gaming preformance a thousand times more than buying a 5600x instead

@@2kliksphilip Ay thanks for replying! I got lucky and managed to get mine for 111$ in late 2020, it was way cheaper than the 2600 was going for here at the time and the performance was similar enough. I'm pretty happy with it and it's also been pretty reliable, accidentally bent its pins once but it still works fine after bending them back into shape, never went past 50 degrees and the performance in software and games is pretty good. I just hope i can buy a powerful GPU before my 1060 3gb fails on me lol.

Protip for anyone putting a fast graphics card next to a shitty CPU. Crank those graphics way up! You want your GPU to be the bottleneck, because if game is held back by GPU it will produce lower FPS, however if CPU is the bottleneck you will get stutters. Usually with good GPU and bad CPU, the GPU will be sitting at low utilization while CPU is spiking to 100%, making the game stutter. Easiest way to fix it is to increase the graphics until your GPU hits close to 100%. You want to experiment, if you set graphics to low and you're getting say 80FPS with stutters you want to increase the graphics to where you have less than 80FPS, because 80FPS is all your CPU can dish out, try to push it past that - stutter. Low FPS is playable, stutter is not, increase graphics!

It's pretty much the worst time to be a gamer... If you're like me, stuck on a 10-year-old system you're in a real pickle. I've been considering buying an i5-12400 and pairing it with a RTX 3050... but the 3050 trades for prices like the GTX 1070 did back in 2016 when you factor in inflation and also the 3050 lies between 1070 and 1080 in terms of performance, this is not a very good deal. I've been primarily using the PS4 for the past few years anyway, so my plan now is to wait until the PS5 is available at some point in the future at the original MSRP. If it takes one or two years and there's already a PS5 Slim... that's fine with me.
