Using the BMW Accessory Battery Charger - How To

Learn in this video how you can recharge the 12V lithium-ion or lead-acid battery of your BMW with the BMW Battery Charger. Make sure your BMW is turned off before opening the bonnet. Before using the BMW Battery charger, make sure to refer to your vehicle’s owner handbook and comply to all safety instructions. Disconnect the clamps from the battery charger, plug the mains plug into the electric socket, and press the “Mode” button on the charger until the correct program is selected. The LEDs on the charge unit indicate the charging programs for “cars” or “motorcycles” with “normal batteries” or with “lithium-ion batteries”. Disconnect the mains plug, and connect the red clamp to the positive pole of the battery or to the jump lead post. Connect the black clamp to an earth post on the car, making sure the black clamp is not connected close to the battery or the petrol line. Connect the clamps to the charger. Insert the mains plug of the charger into the mains socket. Do not switch on the car’s ignition whilst the battery is being charged. The charging procedure starts fully automatically. The charging cycle display shows the current charge level. You can stop the charging progress at any time by disconnecting the mains cable from the mains socket. Once you’ve stopped charging, remove the black clamp from the earth post. Remove the red clamp from the positive pole of the battery or from the jump lead post.

Why you cant turn ignition on while connected to the battery charger? It is supossed to manage properly the voltage (thats why you dont connect it to the battery directly), right?

If it helps, I leave mine charged in the garage for long periods. After 10 days it reaches 'float' level and I leave it like that.

@@BMWthis vid is probably about charging the main battery but not the Lithium battery .. can you use the same terminals to charge the lithium battery ( after selecting lithium from the charger ? ) In another note: I just learnt that if you close your hood ( Lock it ) that will result in the battery not charging, hood must remain open or just cracked not locked.

@@atiqulny I wouldn't connect it directly to the battery because it up jumps the electronics. Best is to connect it under the hood as shown in the video, at the positive pole and negative (black).

Connect the charger under the hood, not the trunk. Because in the trunk you bypass the electronic and the IBS.

Hi we have a 2024 M2 and literally took delivery in march but its rarely used and its saying replace battery? its a brand new car so I am confused, any way I bought the BMW Charger and it got to number 7 on the charger but its still telling me to replace battery, so my question is do I let the charge go to 8 on the charger and how long do I leave it on before it will stop saying replace battery ? and how does one do a trickle charge on the BMW charger as there are no helpful instructions with the charger at all no explantions which is frustrating.... can someone give me more details on the 1-8 lights on the charger as the mode is fairly straight forward as far 2sec it selects the battery in the car any way but the 1-8 lights dont help or explain anything ? and to a NON Electrican this is gibberish!

Does anyone have the new bmw m3 or m4, im trying to find a proper trickle charger but I can’t seem to find any lithium ion ones other than the one with the bmw stamp on it. The ctek trickle charger available online is for LiFePO4, which is lithium iron phosphate. I doubt that’s the correct one to use. I’m just curious what types of trickle charges other people may be using for their new m3/m4

Of course GEL or AGM, in normal mode. Li-ion mode is useful for the M3, M4 with a lithium ion starting battery.
