HOW THE ALTERNATOR WORKS
In 1831, Michael FARADAY discovered that when the magnetic field through a wire changes, this change causes a current to flow through that wire. If this wire is turned by an external power, the energy that provides this conversion is converted into electrical energy. In the periods following this invention of FARADAY, simple manually operated generator systems were developed and this system formed the basis of electric generators. In 1892, an alternator producing alternating current was developed by Nicola TESLA. Alternators work on the principle of electromagnetic induction. Electromagnetic induction causes a current to flow in a wire when the magnetic field passing through it changes. If this wire is rotated by an external power, the energy that provides this rotation (rotational kinetic energy) is converted into electrical energy. As the rotational kinetic energy turns the rotor, the magnetic field around the conductors changes and electric current is produced. The magnetic field of the rotor can be obtained by a current to be transferred by induction. In brushless alternators, alternator can be divided into main and warning system according to its working principle. The main rotor, which is the movable part of the main system, consists of a number of poles that vary according to the number of revolutions. The main poles in the rotor are rotated in the rotating machine speed. Direct current is required for the formation of magnetic current at the poles. It is given by the DC current warning system to the main poles. Although the working principle of the excitation system is the same as the main system, the poles and windings are reversed. That is, in the excitation system, the poles are on the immobile excitation stator, and the windings are on the rotating excitation rotor. The current passing through the independent auxiliary windings in the main stator is rectified in the voltage regulator and given to the pole windings of the excitation stator. Three-phase alternating current occurs in the coils on the exciter rotor, which cuts the magnetic current coming out of the poles.
