How to calibrate the Elcometer 456 Coating Thickness Gauge in accordance with ISO 19840, for rough surfaces (or blast coated substrates), on ferrous substrates.
Get the best performance from the Elcometer 456 Coating Thickness Gauge and make the best use of the gauge’s ±1% accuracy by calibrating the coating thickness instrument to suit the application.
The Elcometer 456 Dry Film Thickness Gauge can measure the thickness of a coating on smooth, and on rough or blast coated substrates; and there are a number of calibration methods for each substrate profile.
When measuring on rough surfaces, if you have access to a sample of the uncoated substrate you will be measuring, then you should undertake a rough surface (or 2-point) calibration.
However, if you don’t have access to the uncoated substrate, then you can use the Elcometer 456’s patented Zero Offset calibration method, which helps measure film thicknesses in accordance with ISO 19840.
ISO 19840 simply states that if a blast profile is unknown, you should calibrate on smooth steel and then subtract a predefined correction value from the measurement taken on the coated surface.
The Elcometer 456’s patented zero offset calibration automatically subtracts this correction value from the measurement, so you don’t have to.
The Elcometer 456 is an intelligent gauge, so, once the gauge has been set to the Zero Offset Calibration, it will guide you through the calibration process, one step at a time.

Please correct my understanding. Consider I am having sample rough blasted surface, to calibrate my elcometer 456 I have to choose rough Rough/2point cal method and place two std foils on blasted surface and follow the cal procedure mentioned on the screen. If there is any mistake in my understanding please comment me

Thank you for your comment. Yes, for calibrating the Elcometer 456 on rough surfaces, you should use the rough calibration method, using two calibration foils, and follow the on-screen instructions. Can I use this to measure curved surface? My plant has loads of cylindrical rolls with hard chrome surface that need periodic measurement of the chrome coating thickness

Hi, You can indeed measure curved surfaces using the Elcometer 456. It is also possible to measure the coating thickness of chrome on ferrous steel. Be sure to calibrate the gauge on an uncoated part of the cylinder. If you have any more questions, please get in touch at support@elcometer.com

I currently possess Elcometer 456 A456CFBS. Which is Calibrated by Local Calibration Center. But when probe is placed on uncoated test plate the values does not show Zero values, rather negatives values are shown. What could be the reason behind this?

What is thickness range it can measure in micron

Hi Kundan, The thickness range is defined by the range of the probe. For example, a scale 1 probe will measure 0-1500 microns whilst a scale 6 probe will measure up to 25mm

Thank you for your comment. If you are able to place a piece of uncoated steel, such as an Elcometer ferrous zero plate, behind the glass panel; an Elcometer 456 with a Scale 7 probe can measure up to 31mm thick, and would measure distance from the probe to the steel panel when the probe is placed on the other side of the glass. This measurement would include both glass panels and the air between them.
