As we’ve talked about often on the podcast, one of the most effective ways to change how we show up in the world is to identify and change our underlying personal narrative. On this episode, I talk with Ian Cron about how we can use the Enneagram personality typing system to aid us in this process.
About our Guest: Ian Cron is a therapist, master Enneagram teacher, best-selling author of The Road Back to You and his latest The Story of You, and host of popular Enneagram podcast Typology.
Key Topics:
0:00 Introduction
1:25 Ian’s narrative and how it has changed over time
6:15 Overview of the Enneagram and its uses
12:25 A few examples of common limiting narratives
20:35 A quick primer of how the Enneagram works and each type
26:55 How people can push back on their unconscious narratives
36:00 Cultivating awareness of how your old story is playing out in the present
37:50 Ian’s inflection point

Forrest and Ian -- I have already listened twice to this dynamic podcast. I loved it! and I plan to be sharing it on all my social media platforms and on my blog about personal growth. Ian Morgan Cron has been an instrumental part of my self development and personal growth journey - and it started with this book, The Road Back to You. I read and shared copes of The Story with You a few months ago. Dr. Rick Hanson piqued my interest in neuroscience and mindfulness six years ago with Hardwiring for Happiness and so many of his teachings. I have listened to Being Well regularly for years....as well as Ian's Typology podcast. I love them both....I learn a lot and get introduced to all kinds of new people and new tools to help my ongoing personal growth experience. The enneagram was remarkably helpful for me not only to understand myself, but also others I care about. It has totally transformed how I view myself and how I show up for others. I have a big toolbox of resources I use for personal growth and I share them with like minded followers on my blog. This podcast is one that needs to be shared and I am going to do just that! Thank you from the bottom of my healed and happy heart!

I’ve love the Enneagram since the early 1990s. Took the trainings with the Enneagram Institute. It’s a very powerful system. Love this conversation. Thank you. 🙏🏼

At 57, and 2/3rds of the county away I am, somehow, still responsible for the cat puking on mother's rug. Didn't even know she HAD a cat!! I've heard it said that kids of parents like this can feel responsible for the rain, which leaves one feeling oddly wrong and yet almost omnipotently powerful, but wrong for being that as well!!

My husband and I love your podcasts. As a trauma therapist who has used the enneagram for over two decades, it would be wonderful if you spoke with one of the well known, and highly respected enneagram teachers. I recommend Mario Sakora. There is a weather of knowledge to be learned from someone with his experience.

First time (and not the last) listener: Forrest, I think you have a real flair for this as your knowledge tied into a sincerity and then keeping the broadcast shaped, all the while asking good questions...well, hats off. Kudos to you & keep up the meaningful work!

This was such a wonderful and beneficial conversation, thank you greatly. I'm hoping maybe you will/could elaborate more upon this subject in regards to someone who has experienced depression for the past 35 years. Some of these self loathing, melancholy, and low self esteem seemly make it harder for me to navigate.

Thank you for the rundown in the middle. I’m new to enneagram and searching for where I land. Do people change over time or is it fixed from young adulthood?
