Good morning Evan and Rebecca and Maggie, you all got a good workout today. Great job with gathering firewood, the Mingo Marker works great when the paint is warmer and shaken WELL 🤗. You two are having a great time and doing it your way, looks great around there . They moved my pontoon boat cover like your camper cover by parking the tractor inside and bolting the bracing together with 4x4’s then jacked it up and secured it to the tractor and drove it to my house. Wish I could help more and had pictures but they were unhooking it when I got home. Hope this helps maybe. Thanks for sharing with us.

A point to consider: Before torching off that brush pile. Have you thought of making a few open pit/open kiln biochar burns? It uses up the wood, gives you charcoal for soil improvement, and you will sequester that carbon in your soils for years to come. I turn all of my brush piles into biochar, and I have hundreds of trees to prune each winter.

JudithB We took down a big oak in the middle of my gardens yesterday, after removing fence and posts. It did cross the driveway so had to move the bee hives, drain a mud hole and clean up the mess before dark! LOL More sun in the garden all day and firewood for next year. I had to mow down a lot of tall weeds too so it was safer. Today I am raking the gardens out to burn leaves and weeds. Spring is coming altho we havent had much winter yet. Enjoy watching your progress as usual!!!

I'm sure that the marker works well for it's intended use. Me personally, I just use the "eye measure" since the firewood that I cut is just for a "camp fire". I'm not as anal about it as some youtubers (looking at you Mike from Outdoors With the Morgans). If cutting firewood was for sale or for profit, then I might use something like that. As far as brush piles, I was able to burn a pretty big one this past weekend due to rain on Friday into Saturday. Low winds and everything wet made it safe for me to burn. Of course my wife was there to help me much like your beautiful Rebeka does. Regarding the drone and footage, I opted for a lesser expensive drone than yours and am still learning how to use it properly. The drone footage in my opinion enhances your videos and looking at some of the shots overhead should be something that you "regularly include" (just my opinion). I realize that it takes extra effort to not only do your regular camera shots, but also fly and watch what your drone is doing. However, I think that the footage really makes your video(s) even more interesting. Finally, it was good to see you wearing proper PPE. It's not really something that I "enjoy", but when I see what it does and the potential of what could happen without it it makes me appreciate it more. Some of my friends "laugh at me" when I "suit up" to do a task, but it doesn't matter to me. I need to "be there" fully functional for my wife and family. I would rather be mocked and made "uncomfortable" in the name of safety.

Fastened a 2 X 4 side to side at the front and a tow strap to the truck. Little by little we got it moved with no damage and no injury's.

Hey Evan I started watching your videos because I'm an AVID Allis Chalmers fan and collector. As an arborist I have some advice. :). When you just touch the ground with your chainsaw I'd suggest sharpening it right away. Just a touch up. I see you're cutting with a dull chain and kickback is a serious concern when it dulls up and nothing dulls it up faster than touching the ground. Sand and dirt are the biggest enemies of the chain. Love the D17 tractor. It's my fave of all Allis Chalmers :)

Don't forget to clear your nozzle! A quick turn upside down and a 3 second spray is easy and will save a lot of cursing when you use it next time ;0) Maybe burning the pile is not the best thing? Do you have access to a chipper? .... if not a hire for the day of a tractor mounted chipper may be worth it! Wood chips are great for your garden or even building up your soil in general. It could be used as an addition to your compost or even in the barn as a underlay for the hay for your goats! ..... and it would make a good video ;0) Anything that won't chip can be burnt so it is a win/win scenario ;0) TBH even if you burn, the ashes are a good addition to your soil!

Please check your pile for any animals that might be sheltering there during winter, like hedgehogs. In Germany it is traditional to have a large bonfire at Easter, farmers used to collect wood all winter, now they have to stack it right before burning or make sure they disturb any animals. As well, some of those rotten tree trunks could be left lying for insects to use as shelter and food, and the insevt s will be food for birds etc

To avoid clogs w/marker-paint, gently smack upper end of Mingo to release spray can. Hold can with tip up and push nozzle to side to blow paint out of nozzle. To avoid finger-crunching handling firewood, I'd suggest www.forestershop.com/forester-log-pickaroon-usa-hickory-handle.html and/or pulpwood hook- saves lots of bending-over too. Very cheap insurance. Before burning pile, I'd suggest going around it with brushcutter for at least 10' swath. Keep Smokey-Bear happy.

Not sure about a possible health issue from burning the logs with paint on them. It seems like it is more trouble than it's worth. You have been cutting wood for a long time. So it seems like you can easily eyeball the 16" that you want. Besides what's the big deal if you are off an inch or two? : ) seems like it's more time consuming and really nit necessary.
@cterrier4 жыл бұрын
I'll never use a Mingo Marker as I don't have a fireplace or the need to cut firewood. Still I was interested in the cost (36.00 on Amazon) and the Paint was $6.00 per can. That seemed okay to me, but probably a little high. Then I saw the price of replacement wheels, The 18" wheel cost $19.00 and the adjustable wheel (from 6" to 24" is $15.75. Both seemed high for a piece of plastic. The cost to make the Wheel is got to be around a $1.00 or less. Guess the small volume of sales is probably whey the cost is too high. It seems to me the Mingo Marker should come with the three wheels and cost $36.00.

I ran it through a board foot calculator. 1" thick 10" wide and 8 feet long and 10 boards total. If I was able to sell the to a mill for $1.50 a board foot as an uncut log. It was $100. Not worth my time. I used to buy walnut rough cut and kiln dried from a saw mill for $2.50 a board foot. So $1.50 a board foot is probably pretty close for an uncut log. Not worth the 4 hours to load and haul it to a saw mill in an attempt to sell it. Time is the resources I have the least of, because I work full time. It might be worth it to some people but not me.

I have not watched the entire video yet but I felt I needed to stop and make an un-invited comment. If this tree is really just fire wood why did you feel the need to cut it so close to the ground? Cutting on your knees is IMHO a bad habit to get into, that tree was almost on the ground before you were even starting to move. I wear the correct PPE also but it won't stop a trunk from flattening ya. I would much rather cut at belt buckle height then go back and cut the stump off.

Given the poor state of your spare land I would dig big, deep trenches, fill them with the rotten limbs, add the brush on top then cover it all with the soil that has been dug out. Give it a year or two and the resultant mounds will sink as the wood rots. You will have the richest soil you have ever seen.
