using trial - pressing "X" key on the masking brush did NOT change the minus to plus sign ... so I stopped as it appeared to be very important to get the plus sign

CHRISTWARD Funny you should say that, they just changed the shortcut with version 2018.5. Now you have to hold down the shift key and x at the same time.

Thanks, really instructive. Would you mind to post your pc specs? Right now I am running On1 Photo Raw 2018, masking and erase tool work pretty slow. Probably because I don't have any dedicated video card, besides the one embedded in CPU (i7 6700K). You think 16gb of ram is enough for 42 mpx RAW images?

Sure. I use a Dell Inspiron laptop with Intel Core Third Generation i7-6500 CPU @ 2.50Ghz. 16GB installed RAM running Windows 10. Radeon R5 M335.

Thank you for your comment. The images I am using are not for general distribution so I don't want to release them but the concepts I'm teaching can be applied in similar photos you can find online or your own.
