For years we've been using the standard applicator to shake static grass onto surfaces we want to develop into lush green meadows and roadsides. However on a trip to England a couple of years ago I saw a demonstration of a new type of applicator that literally turns that approach upside down. This new device makes it easy to add static grass to trees, bushes, buildings, and even animals. IIn this video I want to show you how that works.

Great video. I appreciate that you took an experimental approach and showed both successes and failures. Keep up the good work.

You always have the neatest stuff. When I was in high school in the early 60's and getting into ham radio, I was building my own equipment. I was checking a coil to make sure it had continuity. It did. When I removed the test lead, the field collapsed and put me on the floor. Not bad for a 1½ volt flashlight battery.

Larry you may should have covered that tree with some of the snow static grass and made it a winter wonderland tree, since it have been snowing when I watch the video.

Great video and a quick cheap way to make trees . I've got another. In the UK we have a flowering bush called a hydrangea, the flowers are bigger than your fist and normally come with either blue or pink petals. I just cut them down, remove the petals and they look like real trees. Once dry I cut them into different sizes and paint them in various browns, then the crafty part. I buy a few packs of various shades of foliage from a firm called "woodlands scenic" My 7 year old niece was made up to "help" me. 2 hours later I had over 300 N gauge trees all different sizes and colours

Yes, we use hydrangea over here too. Another one we use is autumn gold sedum. But the super trees offer the finest structure of any plants I have seen.

Thanks for the video Larry, I'll bet that would work great for N Scale trees!!!

I built a static grass applicator similar to the one you built a few years ago. Looks to me like this would be fairly easy to build as well. If powered by a wall wart instead of a battery you may get more kick out of it and get those 4 mm strands to stand up.

I’m beginning to wonder whether that Woodland Scenics’ 4mm static grass was made from a different material than the 2mm. I’ll have to test it with some other bags once I can get some more.mUnfortunately our only hobby shop, HobbyTown, was wiped clean by Hurricane Helen so I’ll have to mail order more. I do know that WWScenics makes theirs from nylon.

@TheDCCGuy your in Asheville area if I remember correctly. Have you checked out Hobby House in Hendersonville? Also the show is coming up in a few weeks I'm Easly. Last year there was a booth full of static grass and other scenic supplies.

Static grass fibres are rayon, I believe, which is affected by the charge and gives the desired affect. Other materials are unlikely to be similarly affected. I did think Noch leaves or something similar from rayon but I think your experiment with 4mm fibres indicates that larger particles won't work with the charge. Thanks for an interesting video.

WWScenics uses nylon for their static grass and I have seen them demonstrate with their 4mm so I wonder whether Woodland Scenics use a different material for their larger grass.

Great easier way to put foliage on trees and bushes. I wonder how it would work putting static grass along the side of an old building where the grass hasn’t been cut for a while?
@TheDCCGuy
@TheDCCGuy 7 күн бұрын
I’ve seen it used to create mossy patches on buildings, shipping crates, etc., anything that can be handled because the box needs to stay put. Keep in mind that the 2mm stuff I was using for foliage corresponds to 7” in HO scale so really good for overgrown grass but you’d want 4mm for tall weeds.

Larry I'min the process of building my new o scale 2 rail layout and am having an issue with my loco et ( I think) trying to run trains and throw switches. Is their any anyone you would recommend that works on layouts for a fee close to Danville Va ? It has become frustrating to say the least and I have a lot invested in this project. It is a bilevel design with 2 helix and stagging. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Enjoy watching your videos have been very helpful and informative Scott thompson

Scott-I don’t know of anyone over your way but you might check with your closest hobby shop and/or club to see if they know of anyone who might be able to help. I know there are clubs and shops down around Raleigh but that would be a long drive. Good luck.

Hello Larry, my question is not pertaining to this video, but something i seen on Iron Planet's website. Resistive wheelsets made by DCC Concepts. What's the use and would 4 need to be used per a piece of rolling stock? Not sure if you have done a segment on these but think it would make a nice one from an informational video. Thanks. Those would be based on UK prototypes so if that’s what you model they should be fine. For US prototypes check out the Logic Rail website.

@TheDCCGuy I'll check them out. But what is the purpose of those wheelsets? Just curious.
@TheDCCGuy
@TheDCCGuy 8 сағат бұрын
They are used to trigger signals on model railroads and in more advanced situations to allow computers keep track of where trains are.

@TheDCCGuy ok, thank you. I don't think I'm going to get that sophisticated and in depth. Sounds like they work similar to reed switches. Thanks again Larry and keep those videos coming!👍

Hi Larry, I have a question for you about dcc. I have a hidden track, which has a reverse loop and another curved turnout within the reverse loop, which goes to my helix for the 2nd level deck. How do you wire this up if possible? I have an AR10 nce reverse loop circuit board for the loop. The loop works, but when I switch the divergent route, I have a short occur

I possibly need an email address. i can send you my track plan so u can see what I'm talking about.
@TheDCCGuy
@TheDCCGuy 3 күн бұрын
If I understand your setup you’ll probably need to isolate the connecting track and put an autoreverser on it to handle the polarity/phase mismatch.
@olebond0071

So r u saying to use another AR10 on the divergent route going to the helix. I'm a novice at this just trying to make the track plan I have work. Or do u recommend a contact on all my questions of how to wire up the layout correctly. I have a total of 3 reverse loops in the plan. One loop is with in my yard above the hidden track

Sorry Larry, I usually find your videos very informative and helpful but... this applicator, at around $50, seems to be a solution in search of a problem. But thanks for the presentation nevertheless.
