@@HOAHamRadio All the old veteran hams tell me I need 100w to start. If 20w is not enough I can always get the amp. The thing I like about the g90 is the tuner. With the FT891 I will require a Tuner on the field. It also has a high current draw even at reduced power. I also like the waterfall on G90 making it easier to find active frequencies
@HOAHamRadio2 жыл бұрын
@Turtle The veteran hams are correct that 100 watts is better. I've been a ham now coming up on 3 years. I've used 5 watt QRP, 20 watt, and 100 watt radios. I would neve recommend any new ham try to start at 5 watts. In my shorter experience compared to the veterans, I have recommended the G90 radio at 20 watts to new hams when 1) the features they want are in this lesser expensive radio, 2) they are just starting and budget is a concern, and 3) because they are just starting out, there is no certainty they will enjoy the hobby, and the G90 then is a lower cost "test" so to speak. While 100 watts is indeed better, 20 watts is acceptable in my opinion and experience. Making contacts during a busy contest will be more difficult on 20 watts, but on non-contest days, making contacts is certainly doable. Here are videos where I am specifically using either the 5 watt G1M, 10 watt IC-705, or 20 watt G90: kzbin.info/www/bejne/bKC1c36FopuMjKc kzbin.info/www/bejne/n2eTd3yGrs13rbc kzbin.info/www/bejne/i3vMf4VjYr9_gtE I'm not going to say 100 watts isn't better, because it is. That said, my son in Texas recently asked me how he can get into ham on a budget; I suggest the G90 for him. Hope this helps.

Very helpful presentation. My WPA125B ATU also keeps the low SWR tuning for a specific band/frequency in memory after the XPA125B has been manually tuned. However my XPA125B ATU has never automatically tuned for low SWR during transmission. Is it possible to reset the manually tuned SWR stored in memory to see if the XPA125B ATU will then automatically tune for low SWR? FYI, like you I'm in a limited space situation. I'm using a stealth 71' sloper end-fed non resonant antenna, 9:1 unun, 50' RG8x, two 15' counterpoises and common mode choke after the XPA125B. Thanks!

As you were making QSOs I noticed that while you talked the G90 meter didn’t move into the yellow or red segments yet the input reading on the amp showed spikes all the way up to 10-14 watts which pushed the amp to full 100 watts out. My question is what was your mic settings on the G90? The compressor was off, but what was the mic gain setting?

Great video! One question: did your CE-19 come with the ALC switch in the ON or OFF position? If it was OFF did you turn it to the ON position for the G90? I’m having trouble turning the output of the G90 above 2 watts without getting the message “ALC Out Of Control!”

Maybe I'm missing something, but I am not sure what you mean by the "auto tune". Maybe my unit is not operating correctly, but I did not see any auto-tune on my unit. Your test in CW mode did not output any power from the G90 so I can not really see if this working as expected. My issue with this PA were "ALC out of control" when kaying 5W AM, on some bands even 1W AM and low power output on 30 and 20m (max 45W with 5W AM input). Any thoughts? Thank you.

On SSB do u run the g 90 at full output of 20 watts
@HOAHamRadio Жыл бұрын
You start off much lower, say 3 to 5 watts, to drive the AMP. You don't want the AMP going over 100. If you drive 20 watts into the AMP you would overdrive and potentially damage it.
@justinruth9729 Жыл бұрын
Guess this applies for this amp only .. Most amps on SSB can take much more ssb input .... I understand you hate your saying ...on this amp .... I have my g 90 going into another 3-30mhz broad band amp and it takes 12 watts to get to 100 ... Or duty..I guess the 125... Is limited for 100 max output ...am I right here ...
@HOAHamRadio Жыл бұрын
You are right, the XPA125B only needs 3-5 amps to drive it. You can adjust the amps in from the G90 higher than 5, if that is what is needed to get the XPA125B up to 100 output. Xiegu has all kinds of warnings about driving the XPA125B over 100...

OK I'm confused. The reason you have 1.0 SWR when you use the PTT on CW is you are putting out 0 watts ( see the XPA125B display input power shown at 0 when you PTT in CW in your video) and so your reflected power is zero. I believe you have to key up ( CW key input) rather than activate the PTT which does not send a carrier on CW mode.

Si Smith; my memory isn't so how these days so I don't recall the specifics. What I do recall is that Xiegu has very specific guidance on how to operate between the G90 and XPA125B; I believe I was attempting to operate per their instructions. Radioddity, the major US distributor of Xiegu has since provided their own guidance on how to operate between the two units.... I haven't tried their guidance yet. Thanks for watching and commenting.

@@HOAHamRadio Yes - the easiest way to do this is FM at 5W with PA off - press the tune button until it tunes and then switch PA back on and select mode ( can turn the power down to 1-3W too) If you don't have FM ( old firmware) you can use AM Otherwise you need a CW key inserted.

In your video you show that the ATU in the G90 must be turned off. I have read that. I also have read that by using the ATU button on the G90, it tells the XPA125B to tune to the frequency that is tuned to on the radio. I have done that and it seems to work well. So would the happy medium be is to press the auto tune on G90 radio to tune and then push again to turn off ATU in radio. I did learn that I was doing the manual tune on the XPA125B incorrectly. I also have a question about power output. With the G90 set at 2 watts. I get variing power outputs on SSB on the XPA 125B. For example. I get 100-125 out of the amp on 20 meters and only 75 max on 40 meters. Same antenna after tuning with ATU. Any ideas? RJ KM6AVH.
@HOAHamRadio2 жыл бұрын
R Cass, unless Xiegu has changed their documentation, they recommend leaving the G90 tuner off; so that is how I demonstrated it. Sounds like you have come across an alternative. The XPA125B is my only experience with Amps; getting different output on different bands is typical with this tuner; you can change the output level by band by changing the watts in. I started a Facebook Group for the Amp many months ago...people smarter than me are members; it is a good place to ask questions and get input from other uses. facebook.com/groups/xpa125b/
