Good video. Going to try this to premix multiple guitar mics, not sure it can work the same but going to give it a try.

It absolutely will work. I've done it quite a few times for multi-mic'd guitars.

Very helpful video, and kind of surprising I can hardly find this essential info anywhere else on KZbin. Few questions for you; I see you just created a stereo track for the overheads in your daw, does that mean the hard panning you've done on both overheads in Console are being automatically printed and will remain on that stereo track inside your daw? Also, at 3:40, how did you select all those tracks to go at once in aux1? We just see you right click on one and somehow they're all selected. And finally, how do you create a channel in Console to control music coming from the computer (Spotify for instance) or a music track from the daw? Thanks again for your channel, very helpful!

Thank you! I usually use a stereo OH track in the DAW, but it's just for convenience. I don't do anything to print that specifically. As to the copy to main function, that was all done with one click and affects all tracks, so have the faders down on any tracks you don't want in the buss. As to the playback level control, you'll want to follow this video - kzbin.info/www/bejne/d3KTfoZ9ftZsr8k Thanks!

Interesting, that you mix in console and not in your DAW. May i ask why you do that? How is your process - when Do you switch to you DAW? What benefits do you have mixing in console instead of your DAW? Why do you prefer Console? And where do your tracks come from, if they are not coming from ProTools - because you open that later??? Too many questions, i know, but i would really like to know your DAW-Console setup and workflow. Best regards and great videos for Apollo you put up here!

Thanks for the questions! It's really just to get a great sound on the way in and for monitoring. It's also really simple to control all the drums with one fader instead of 14...

@@MattHepworth yes, but you can also do this with a bus in the DAW. I just run a comparison test using routing in console compared to using routing in the DAW with hardware units, unfortunately the Console routing using virtual channels is worse than using the channels directly fro, the DAW. i hoped this would be a great solution, but it isn't. best regards

How did you right click all the drum tracks into a bus? Did you have to group them first or click on the furthest left track and then the furthest right complete newby here
@MattHepworth
@MattHepworth Жыл бұрын
They're not really multi-selected. The right-click and copy to applies to all channels. Since we were just working with the drums' faders, that's all that were really copied. Hope that makes sense. Thanks!

@@MattHepworth that helps a lot. Thanks. So would I just have to set up the drum bus before I plug-in my microphone and guitar, so it doesn’t include those inputs?
@MattHepworth
@MattHepworth Жыл бұрын
That's easiest, but you can also just pull those aux sends down for those tracks you don't want in the bus quickly, too.
@Volodiaschneider
@Volodiaschneider Жыл бұрын
If your aux is set to pre, won't that cancel the volume balance you did just before sending it to the aux?
@MattHepworth
@MattHepworth Жыл бұрын
Though the channels no longer affect that, I used the copy to aux function for the faders at 3:40. This sends copies that main mix as the aux mix for aux 1. Then you just mute the channels so you don't hear both main and aux.

If I play back drum tracks via Logic DAW I can’t them to play back in the Apollo program. How do you do that ?

Hi, this is specific for Console (during recording).

@@MattHepworth that’s for messaging back Let me explain better. My Console and Logic Pro DAW are routed and I can record fine, when I play/record the drums the fader channels (kick, snare, overheads) in both logic and console light up. However once the recording done and I play back my tracks only 1 fader (I’ve named Logic) lights up in console not the individual channel strips ie Snare, Kick, Over heads On your video all your channels strips on Console are lighting up during play back - how did you manage to do that?

@@ChrisPhillipsDrumLessons Hi Chris, no, I was using it for live inputs (emulating a tracking situation), not for playback.

1. No unison pres, so are you adjusting input gain externally? Or just at your Console faders? 2. Do you have to adjust the room and sub-mix for delay compensation if it's going through the AUX channels? 3. You didn't show setting up the AUX plugins to print, but I assume you did that?
@MattHepworth

Hi Alex, in this video I was using outboard feeding my Apogee Symphony I/O and feeding the ADAT to Apollo. I don't always print the aux, but when I do I do a -73 sample offset and treat it as a stem (muting the individual tracks in the DAW).

Are you listening to someone play or are you looping back through UAD Control something you already recorded? If so how would I do that?
@MattHepworth

For the repeatability, I was feeding this into Apollo track by track from a 16 track recorder, but the concept is for doing it live.

Hello Matt, I hope I don't bother?! I have some more questions. 1. is it possible to assign ANALOG outboard gear (a Stereo EQ and a Stereo Bus Compressor; 500 series modules) to your created Bus in Console software for Live monitoring? 2. How can I route my Spotify/KZbin music from my Laptop/Smartphone into Console software? Because I mostly play Drum alongs/ Drum Covers on my drum set, using Live music feed. With my TASCAM Model24 that is easy. How to do that with an Apollo and Console software....I have no clue, because I don't know how to connect my laptop´s earphone jack to an Apollo!? In a DAW you can upload music tracks of course and use it, but Console is for Live monitoring and tracking.....which I want to use. I am still not sure if I shall get an Apollo or any other Audio Interface, since Carbon has only 8 analog inputs and outputs, not enough for me and ADAT is not possible for my analog hardware setup. Thanks and best regards Joerg
@MattHepworth
@MattHepworth 2 жыл бұрын
You can get a software return by using Virtuals. You can send your bus to a Cue that is assigned to a hardware out that you can use analog processing on, but you'll have to return it to inputs that are solo'd in order to hear that back in the Apollo or record it.

Hey Matt! How are you able to control the parameters of "inserts" and preamps during playback in console? I can do this when recording straight into logic. For instance, record a drum track, then press play and start manipulating my plugins until it sounds how I want. I can't figure out how to do this with console despite my best search efforts. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Console is more for recording and liver monitoring. In this vid I have it dialed in and sounding good live so it can be printed that way via bus. On playback it should sound identical to the processing I was getting live because it's printed that way. Can you help me understand what you're wanting to do with Console during playback, specifically?

@@MattHepworth Thanks for the quick reply. I was wondering if there was a way to use my UA effects/plug-ins/inserts/pre-amps the way that you are in your video? - where you have the track that you've recorded playing back and you're able to manipulate plug-in settings etc.
@MattHepworth

I see. It's a live input scenario, not playback. The drums are external fed over Apollo's ADAT in.

@@MattHepworth Hi Matt, yeah I've a similar question... So if I understand well, if I'm recording drums alone in my home studio, there is no way to record myself and then shape my phone mix using the playback? I have to shape it while playing at the same time? Are you saying you had a drummer playing live while filming this tutorial or were you able to feed it a playback? Thank you!
@MattHepworth

@@Volodiaschneider Two options: you could record raw, then send them to Apollo via ADAT out to ADAT in, or you can record them raw, use the Apollo plugins in the DAW, then copy and paste the settings into the same plugins in Console. For my video to demonstrate the concept, I used drums and settings I'd just tracked, but didn't commit plugins, and then ran them back through Console.
