Its been a little while since I was flying regularly with a GTN 650, but I remember some of the VNAV quirks. At 2:22, the magenta arrow is pointing to RW21 which means that the active leg in the 650 is from V3NM to RW21. VNAV will not capture the path because the active leg is from V3NM to RW21. If I remember correctly, you need to press V3NM and click the ACTIVATE LEG button in the top left seen at 2:25. This will activate the leg from the aircraft's current position to V3NM and will allow for VNAV to that waypoint and altitude. Then you should be able to capture the approach with the APR button on the AP panel. I hope this helps, Scott

Thanks Scott. You can also just activate the approach and the leg will be the 28 mile path. Rick

Nice work: Would you consider providing a summary video (or even written summary) of the "steps" that lead to a nice VNAV approach from other than a direct angle?

To get the alt selector to 6180, set your baro min to 6180 on the G3X, then the alt selector will offer 6180 when you scroll down past 6200. To set baro min, hit the HSI with your finger, it will pop up a box that offers a baro min input.

Thanks Brett. Didn't think of that, but I'll try it next flight. i usually set the min when flying a regular approach. Rick

Or just click the altitude bug on the G3X and type in 6189. However, it doesn't really matter as long as the bug is below the restriction in your flight plan. VNAV is not going to follow the altitude bug, it will follow the flight plan restriction, but it checks your bug to make sure that you don't want to be higher than the restriction. Thus 6100 worked because its below 6189. Also, you don't necessarily need to activate an approach for VNAV to work. For example, I often use it just to get to pattern altitude 2 or 3 miles before my destination or to be at a certain altitude in my flight plan. Click your destination waypoint, then click "along track" then select 3 miles (or whatever you want) and click "save". Then set an altitude restriction for that waypoint (e.g., 1000 feet AGL) and activate the leg to the offset. From inside the flight plan click "menu" and you can select the FPA angle (2.3° gives me about 500ft/min in my C182) or set it to exactly 500ft/min (or whatever you want) (pro tip, you'll need to back off on manifold pressure for constant speed during descent or VNAV will automatically descend faster to meet the restriction). You can use VNAV for any waypoint, not just approaches or along track. Its very handy on an approach with multiple altitude restrictions. VNAV will automatically step down the approach along the way. HOWEVER, the GFC500 will NOT automatically transition from VNAV to approach. Don't be tempted by this option in the GTN configuration settings (do not turn it on or it will mess up your approaches). The GFC600 will make the transition but not the GFC500. Its not a big deal because all you need to do is turn off VNAV on the GFC500 when you reach your FAF and arm APR on the GFC500. As long as your approach is active in the flight plan, it will pick it up. I'm probably making this sound way more difficult than it really is.

Hi, What do you use as a baro-corrected altitude source? I have GTN 650 and 2 GDU 370. Trying to use VNAV, the GTN calculate TOD, BOD and VS required. VNAV get armed in the GDU 370 but when reaching the TOD, the autopilote just continues at the same altitude an VNAV never get activated. And, yes, the alt selected is lower than the alt at BOD in the profile. The VNAV-profile looks good too. What can be possibly be wrong? Many thanks in advance

Hi Shahram. If you haven't already, watch the Garmin vids on VNAV. My baro corrected source is the G3X and/or the G5. Yours should be getting it from your 370. Sounds like you're doing everything right, but it's not working. Check in your flight plan and make sure the altitude you're trying to capture in in Cyan and not White. If your autopilot is in NAV mode, the altitude is set below your current altitude, the autopilot is in VNAV mode and the altitude is in CYAN it should work. Good luck. Rick

Can you give the full avionics equipment list? What are you using for ads-b in and out, where and what type of VOR/ILS antenna is installed, etc. I’m interested in what avionics is needed to equip a plane to be able to take ones IFR checkride in and I know it’s more than just a WAAS GPS but I don’t see many guys on KZbin doing VOR/ILS demos.

G3X touch, G5, GTN 650. ADS-B from the Garmin 45R. Standard VOR antenna mounted on the tail. FAR 91.205 listed equipment necessary for IFR flight. Check my channel. I have several ILS approaches shown. Thanks. Rick

Didn’t Garmin ever hear keep it simple stupid. I think there will be a lot of accidents involving Garmin because they make things too complicated and less than intuitive. Many pilots grew up on Garmin and they have swallow the cool aid. Doesn’t anyone notice the constant barrage of “ you can’t do this until you do this” they aren’t really safety issue driven, they are “workaround”. Much of the software driving Garmin was written 10 years ago. I’m sure it’s OOD and they just layer features on top. They add a new processor because the spaghetti code is loaded with if then else’s which are slow to process. If you doubt this answer this. Why is the primary display on the G3X the same size in full screen as it is in split. Full screen has a huge amount of dead space. Do you really need 2/3’s of the screen for horizon? It’s because they don’t have the team to rescale the display.
