Nice video -- I "know" almost all of it just through trial-and-error by now, but, as always, one or two new things come up! The tip about putting your back thumb on the rear harness line to more easily unhook is one I might have to try. Sometimes, hooking in and unhooking is not easy, especially when I set my boom chin height or higher. The thumb on the harness line trick could be really helpful for some of those fall-in-backwards incidents when the sail comes on top of you and you are underwater...will have to see. Being able to move the harness lines is so nice. I only figured out that you can keep them very loose and they stay put when they need to just recently.

Great vid as always. I’m just getting back into windsurfing after an almost 20 year break and your guides help me a lot. I will go right ahead and loosen my harness lines, I agitate found it impossible to adjust them while riding. In the beginning when you say your height: 5 foot 8 would be 173cm, not 180. I guess the 180 cm are correct for you, given that you say your weight in kg and not the made up fairy tale units ;)
@Cookiesports
@Cookiesports 17 күн бұрын
I just checked, today I weigh 79 kg and measure in at 175 cm! Hope that, and the video, are helpful to you! I have a follow-up to this video taking the harness skills up a notch coming out soon!

I haven't sailed for a while. Off injured as usual..but I think when I'm really overpowered I use my front hand really close to the mast and push against the boom to avoid the sail from taking over?? smashing back into me? It's been a while since I've done it but that's what I remember. I know that's in 'extreme" conditions but that seems to be the opposite of what you're saying?
@Cookiesports
@Cookiesports 17 күн бұрын
Definitely sounds like the opposite of what I’m saying! Putting your front hand close to the mast is a good way of losing power, but then if you push that hand it will power you back up again! Your two moves described here sound like they are cancelling of each other out!!

I keep in mind things you've said about the harness lines in previous videos of yours as well. So very helpful as always! One thing I'm having trouble with is my harness keeps sliding up and turns into a bra! It must mean I sit a lot on the harness lines instead of pulling, right?
@Cookiesports
@Cookiesports 17 күн бұрын
Exactly right! If the harness is riding up, then you are not pulling perpendicular to the boom, but instead sitting down. I have a follow-up to this video coming soon that might be helpful to

Great vid! Sometimes I struggle with the position of the harness lines…it feels like the board wants to turn into the wind. Would moving the lines forward or backward help with this? Cheers
@Cookiesports
@Cookiesports Күн бұрын
Likely not either…. It could more likely be about foot pressure- you’re accidentally steering with your back foot. 🦶

thanks for your great video ! 32 inches is the total harness loop lenght, or one side?
@Cookiesports

The harness lines are measured from doom to boom, so the full length of the loop

nice smal tings to implement in my sailing. Do you have anything on how to close the sail properly when i want to go realy fast? when is it fully closed? paralell? and when the wind goes down in the middel of a run on strong wind. how to get back up without steering to much upwind

I have been badly injued three times while windsurfing --always while trying a harness. Even with a long line I get stuck. This last time I landed on top of my sail with me ankle between mast and board. The other times the wind gusted and ripped my shoulders, one surgery each shoulder :( I'm afraid I'll never be able to improve beyond my current, fairly intermediate point. Even though I'm brave enough to try and try again, I'm getting to be an old lady and just sick of the injuries! Is there like a super-fail-safe-harness you can recommend, maybe something that releases when there is a gust? However, I do feel like if I were in the conditions you are sailing in this video I would be fine. What was the wind speed? And I thought the purpose of using a centerboard was to sail upwind. So how are you sailing upwind wothout one? I find that without it I'm pushed downwind. Maybe its because I'm on a lake usually? I will watch more of your videos. Thank you!

So in 9.0 sail i need about 9 hands?
@Cookiesports

It only works as a very rough guide between around 4.5 to 6.5 sales. However, the summary is always it is a very rough guide!… i’m still with the general thought that most people have their harness lines too far forward. Today I was on a 6 m sale, I had my harness lines 7.5 hands back from the mast!
