Using Zildjian L80s Plus Remo Silent Stroke Heads VS Buying An Electronic Drumset

My thoughts on Zildjian L80s with Remo Mesh Heads VS buying an electronic drumset for the same price.
It’s a cool combination for practice, the Remo heads are very quiet. Some people think that they are the same as the Roland mesh heads, or even the Alesis mesh heads. That’s not quite true actually. These heads are a very thin one ply mesh head. They are very bouncy, but still have a great feel for practice. The Zildjian L80s great too. The sound is very very quiet for a metal cymbal, it’s not an annoying ting ting sound like you’d get from a Alesis Surge cymbal (they use a thin sheet of plastic right underneath the metal to dampen it) the L80s sound is mostly the attack of the stick, not a ton of tone underneath. This is a result of the sound lowering mods they had to make to the classic acoustic sound less defining. Let’s look at the price: $300-$250 for the cymbal set and about $90 for a set of the Remo mesh heads. If I was in a tough situation, needing to lower my drum volume to practice, this is definitely an option. But the tone of the whole thing is lacking, and you’ll have to take the heads on and off, on and off if you plan on using the set acoustically as well, which would be pretty time consuming. But I’m glad this system is out there. If we look at electronic drumsets at that price point, you’re going to buy a Alesis Nitro, or maybe a DXT400k for a $100 more. So that price for a quieter setup is very fair. The advantage of getting an electronic drumset instead is that you have a dedicated kit just for practice, less hassle. Also it's easy to record, connect to drum software for pro sounds even. Plus an electronic drumset at that price is very portable. I think either option is good, but it's your call depending on your situation.
