This is the last piece my band director is going to conduct at my school before he leaves. It makes me sad every time I listen to this piece because the piece was written about a boy who’s going off to war, maybe to never see his family again. The parallels between the two situations that were faced make this a rightful last piece for my director.

Played first horn on this piece in my HS wind ensemble in 2001, and went on to play Shepherds Hey and Lincolnshire Posy as well. Grainger was a truly unique arranger and orchestrator - I particularly appreciate how he used the saxophones (soprano down to bass) as kind of a lush string section, blending them with the other winds and brass. It’s amazing to realize that Grainger published this piece in 1911, well before the Holst suites. Military bands up to that point were played outdoors for marches and fanfares, but Grainger went out on a limb and wrote serious and sensitive music for band. We take this type of music for granted today but he was a true pioneer that set the stage for Vaughn Williams, Copland etc to write for band.

Everyone is being very appreciative and serious here so I'll start by saying that this is a beautiful arrangement and performance of a classic well-loved piece, and I especially love the Euphoniums in this. That being said, I thought it hilarious at 3:40 that homeboys oboe and mr. timpani are just sitting there during the climax with nothing to do.

The only part of the whole piece is the cymbal roll. Us percussionists often have long breaks doing nothing but counting bars. Seems almost wrong in a [aid gig you receive the same $$ as the strings & woodwind which are playing most of the time.
