You missed the Gulf--it was an awesome war. K 3/2 was so motivated, we got drunk in Dubai and Abu Dhabi; I was a shit-bag not to have personally thanked Saddam Hussein for the epic save. It was lowly of me not to have contacted him before he got hung. We'd just started a CAX in CA. We'd just got off the bus; it was hot as goddamn shit--worse than Oman was, actually, and fast--within a short time prickly heat set in, it was clear that CAX was going to seriously suck. We hadn't done any work yet or gotten dirty and were already miserable; then we got saved by a dictator "'Get back on the bus, boys--we're going to war!' 'HOORAY!!!'"

My other son joined the Marine Corps when he was old enough, and he was the crew chief of a particular helicopter that I can't disclose info on, or the same punishment of losing his communication privilege would happen just like his brothers would happen. Leon Davis I went through Parris Island from Oct '91 - Jan '92 and definitely remember those movements. That was preparing your slings to to stack arms. I miss Parris Island! I'll never forget those silver pipes interconnected all over the island with smoke coming put of them!

Dumb question… the guide, does he practice a lot with the rifle for drill movements or just only with the guidon?
@alexanderwalle3568 Жыл бұрын
The guide doesn't get a rifle, they're expected to go everywhere and do everything with the guidon; even at Denny's, where it can be stolen in a moment of eating too much and nodding off--it's a responsibility not to be taken lightly.

The more I learn, and the more _actual_ veterans I talk to, I'm beginning to suspect that the whole "DI's were rougher back in the old days" is just old men suffering from juvenova, and trying to pretend they were tougher than they were.
@Sniperm0n4 жыл бұрын
I agree, my DIs in 2010 were way tougher and harder on you than what this video portrays. It's possible they could be dialing it down a notch for the video though.

Ranstone, I arrived on Parris Island on April 1, 1956. It was one week before the Ribbon Creek tragedy. DI's used punches, slaps, choking, slurs, ridicule, and other teaching methods to emphasize the importance of what we needed to learn. My DI's had been in Korea, and my senior DI had been in WWII and Korea. They had reasons aplenty to drum those lessons into our thick skulls.
@Leatherneck-jk9ew4 жыл бұрын
In 94 our DI's punched , chocked , kicked us. Hazing was absolutely part of the culture. Anderson wherever you are I still feel DI SGT Lesey punching you into your rack. Plt 2038 . The new corps is better equipped than we were . Gear got better by leap years before I got out.

I was never in the USMC; I was in the army and went to basic back in 1987. Back then the focus was on defeating the Russian's, and watching out for the welfare of your fellow soldiers. What a different world! Ronald Reagan was the commander in chief; and, our country, society, and way of life was vastly different. If everyone had to experience the challenges of boot camp/basic training our country would be a much better place.......hooah!

Honestly they never should have switched from them. Only thing is the Navy should have had them too instead of the dumb fragile utilities. Now every branch has to have their own camo pattern to keep defense contractors in business.
